This Day in History: 25 March, 1992

On this day, Pakistan lifted the Cricket World Cup for the first time at the Melbourne Cricket Ground under the captaincy of Imran Khan. The historic victory gave a massive fundraising boost to the construction of Pakistan's first tertiary care cancer hospital: the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore.

Imran Khan donated his entire Β£90,000 prize money share to the project. He then toured the streets and cities of Pakistan, witnessing unprecedented generosity from people of Pakistan who stepped forward to help turn his dream, inspired by his mother’s battle with cancer, into reality.

The hospital opened on December 29, 1994, and has been serving humanity for over 31 years, providing free cancer treatment to thousands of patients who could not otherwise afford it. A triumph that went far beyond cricket and became a step towards saving countless lives.

🏏 πŸ† Jazak Allah Khair, Skipper!

Imran Khan was passionate about cricket from a young age. After graduating in 1976, he took up the sport full-time. He achieved his greatest sporting success on 25 March 1992, leading Pakistan to its first Cricket World Cup victory.

At 73, fans still celebrate his bowling and his efforts to make international cricket fairer through neutral umpires.
