Here is a closer insight into Cana's cherished memories of her Serbian culture and the costumes she designed!

"Cana is very proud of her Serbian cultural heritage. She has always been very skilled in many textile crafts from her burling and mending career at Salts Mill to designing, sewing and knitting clothes for herself and her children.

Her greatest pleasure though was involvement in the Morava Serbian Orthodox Church folk dance group as 'wardrobe mistress' for many years. She meticulously researched, designed and made many costumes and above all her pride and joy was to see her own daughters wearing these costumes and continuing the rich textile, music and dance folk traditions from Serbia and other regions of the former Yugoslavia. In Cana's own words "I felt really proud when I saw my daughters wearing the costumes - it is important to carry on tradition."

This offers a powerful insight and reminder that each of our residents has lived an interesting life. It highlights the 'life before dementia' which is such an important part of truly knowing and understanding the people we care for.

Here is a closer insight into Joan's cherished memories of the chapel she attended and community it created!

"The chapel was very special to me and a special part of my social life. I really enjoyed playing the organ for the church community. I also practised there in my free time. I used to get a lot of song requests with what people liked me to play. I enjoyed playing people’s favourites

Joan’s daughter- The Chapel was a very significant part of our life as a family. My mum had brought us as kids so we also spent a lot of time there. It was more of a tight knit community where everybody knew each other and shared a lovely common ground which was their faith and the general chapel spirit. My mum loved it and it was such an intimate part of her life that I know will stay with her. When my mum was in her 20s, she had an old friend who was a fantastic artist. She went to Art College and painted my mum the painting of the chapel as a gift."

This offers a powerful insight and reminder that each of our residents has lived an interesting life. It highlights the 'life before dementia' which is such an important part of truly knowing and understanding the people we care for.

We had a lovely surprise visit from the relatives of Fay, one of our much-loved residents who passed away two years ago.

Fay was a remarkable lady, awarded an OBE for her services to teaching. She always wore this on her birthday and any royal occasions. This was as a result of the help with overseas teachers and helping them to settle in a new country. This help was continued in Elderthorpe when she always welcomed new residents and spent time reassuring them that they would be ok. She left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

One of her final wishes was to donate her body to the university for research, something she had thoughtfully included in her end-of-life care plan. We worked closely with the university ahead of time to ensure everything was in place and that her wishes could be carried out smoothly.

Her cousin Harry shared with us that he had recently collected her ashes, and while there, a lecturer told him, “The students have learnt a great deal from studying Fay, and asked for more time.”

It was incredibly moving to hear that Fay’s passion for teaching has continued to make a difference, even after her passing. We know she would have been so proud to play a part in educating future generations.

Rest in peace, Fay❤️
