Heat Therapy

How it works
Heat therapy works by improving blood flow to a specific area due to the temperature increase. This can give a relaxing, easing effect increasing muscle flexibility and soothing stiff muscles which can decreasing discomfort. Heat can be applied in various ways:
β€’Locally - so applying heat so a small area such as a stiff muscle.
β€’Regionally - for larger areas using large heat pads such as a full limb
β€’Whole Body- using using things like baths or sauna

When to use it
As a generally rule we’d apply heat to easy muscle pain and stiffness caused by various factors With cold being applied to injury’s in the acute phase.

How it’s done
We’re looking to warm the area rather than hot. And can be more beneficial over a longer time 20-30 minutes unlike cold therapy that we’d normal time limit.

When it’s used
We’d use cold or cryotherapy in the acute phase (Basically couple of days after it happened) of an injury to try reduce pain and swelling.

How it works
Cold therapy works by reducing the blood flow to an area which can reduced swelling and inflammation which causes pain and also reduce nerve activity temporarily which can also ease pain.

How to apply
From treaments at Home we could use an ice pack wrapped in a towel applied to the skin or even an ice bath for between 10-20 minutes is usually fine and can be applied every 2 hours of so.

Contra indictions
People with sensory disorders should avoid ice as over exposure may cause nerve damage or burn the skin.

So it’s January and lots of us will beginning a journey to be fitter, healthier or try and drop some body fat . Here’s a few tips to help you along the way:

Set a start point
Set a realistic starting point. Suddenly trying to hit the gym 7 days a week after you’ve spent a month on the sofa eating toblerone or running a 40minute 10k when your previous longest run is up the stairs when you realised you’ve left the bath running arnt gonna happen in your first week.

Make a plan
A structured periodised plan is essential not only does this help you avoid spending on hour strolling around the gym lost. But also means you’ll be able to see the small wins you make each session.

Consult a professional
Fitness, health and especially fat loss arnt a straight line and the amount of bullsh*t information out there can make it all the more confusing. If in doubt seek out help from a professional with proven results it will put you at a distinct advantage.

Here’s a few people who know there sh*t and provide excellent advice and guidance to anyone starting (or well versed for that matter) in there fitness journey.
