Can I claim a funeral payment from the government?
You could get a Funeral Payment if you’re on a low income and need help to pay for a funeral you’re arranging. How much you get depends on your circumstances and if you qualify. The Funeral Payment can help pay for:
• Disbursements (3rd party Fees cremation/ buriel fees, including the cost of the doctor’s certificate)
• up to £700 for funeral expenses, such as funeral director’s fees, flowers, coffin
To get a Funeral Payment you must be responsible for the funeral and:
1. claim in time,
2. receive a qualifying benefit
3. meet the rules on your relationship with the deceased,
If there’s a close relative of the deceased who isn’t getting one of the qualifying benefits you will not be able to claim Funeral Payment.
You have to pay back any money you get from the deceased person’s estate (if they have one).

Put me in a wheelie Bin!
It is a criminal offence to put a body in a wheelie bin as a body comes under the definition of “clinical waste” would have to be disposed of under the provisions of the control of pollution act 1974 and the Environment protection act 1990. It is a criminal offence to dispose of a body without compliance to the acts and with respect to pollution of the water table.

Can I be buried in my Garden like Princess Diana?
You would need permission of the landowner which is highly unlikely to be granted unless you own the land yourself as this will have an adverse effect on the market value of the property, something to be considered if you do own your property outright and could result in the property being unsaleable.
If the property is sold the new owner would be entitled to apply for a licence to exhume the deceased.
If you still decide to go ahead with a garden burial you will then need to obtain consent from the local authority and as a body comes under the definition of “clinical waste” would have to be disposed of under the provisions of the control of pollution act 1974 and the Environment protection act 1990. It is a criminal offence to dispose of a body without compliance to the acts and with respect to pollution of the water table.
This can be more costly than you think as you will need:
A licensed operator
A register of the grave
A plan showing the exact location

Plus the unknown cost of property devaluation

Can I donate my body to science?
Yes, The Human Tissue Act requires a positive decision to be made by the person, before their death, and consent form is required. However, if no medical school is able to accept your offer, your estate will need to make suitable funeral arrangements.

Do debts die with you?
It's often said that "when you die, your debts die with you". But it's a little more complicated than that. When you die, anything you owe has to be paid first, before any assets can go to your beneficiaries. So if you owe more than your assets are worth, your debts do die with you. Your beneficiaries will get nothing, but they won't be asked to pay the rest of the debt.
But if your inheritors are jointly responsible for the debts, your debts don't die with you as they'll have to make up the shortfall.

Can I be buried at sea?
You can apply for a marine licence to bury someone at sea for £175 in the following locations:
• off The Needles, Isle of Wight
• between Hastings and Newhaven
• off Tynemouth, North Tyneside
You’ll be responsible for ensuring the coffin is built to the correct specifications and the MMO has the right to inspect the body and coffin before a burial at sea.
When you apply you must include:
• the death certificate
• a Certificate of Freedom from Fever and Infection
• a notice of intention to remove a body out of England

This type of funeral is typically more expensive because of the additional costs of hiring a boat, weighted coffin etc.
Anyone buried at sea has to be laid to rest with the contact details of their next of kin secured to the body in case the body is washed ashore which could result in further expense in re-submerging the body.

Who has to pay for a funeral?
Typically, the costs of a funeral are shouldered by the estate of the deceased. Funeral expenses are a priority obligation that will be paid before most other estate debts. However, some secured debts, such as a mortgage, are paid before funeral costs.
If, however, there still aren't enough funds, the person who signed the funeral contract will be responsible for the outstanding amount If you offer to pay for the funeral, it’s worth checking with the administrator of the estate that you’re able to recover the money later on if you need to.
