🐴 What Is Wobbler Syndrome in Horses? 🧠

If your horse seems uncoordinated, stumbles often, or moves like they’re “drunk,” it could be wobbler syndrome—a neurological condition caused by spinal cord compression in the neck. This condition is thought to affect 1 in 100 thoroughbreds!

🧬 It’s most common in young, fast-growing horses but can affect any age. Causes include genetics, trauma, or nutritional imbalances.

📋 Diagnosis involves imaging, and while some cases can be managed or treated, others may not recover fully.

If you notice signs, contact your vet ASAP. Early detection matters!

🐎 Did You Know? The Multifidus Muscle Plays a BIG Role in Your Horse’s Back Health! 🐴

Tucked deep along your horse’s spine is a little-known but powerful muscle called the multifidus. It may be small, but it’s a key stabilizer for the vertebrae—and crucial for maintaining a strong, healthy back.

💡 Weakness or atrophy in the multifidus can contribute to:
🔹 Back pain
🔹 Poor performance
🔹 Resistance under saddle
🔹 Loss of topline

The good news? With the right exercises, this muscle can be reactivated and strengthened. Think polework, hill work, and proper rehab strategies after injury.

Taking care of your horse’s core isn’t just about abs—it’s about deep spinal support, too! 💪🐴

👉 Curious if your horse could benefit from multifidus-targeted work? Let’s chat or consult your equine physio!

This might have been the scariest thing I’ve done since my exams 🙈
Last night Maldon Young Farmers visited for a physiotherapy demo! It’s was great to introduce a new audience to the ins and outs of the job and things they can look out for when watching their own animals 🐴🐶

Approximately 50% of the UKs horses and dogs are overweight or obese! That’s a staggering statistic!

Seeing your animals every day means it can sometimes be difficult to spot small changes in their weight. Using a body conditioning score chart, weight tape or using a scale at your vets or local feed store can be very beneficial! Keep a track of their weights to monitor any fluctuations! ⚖️

Those extra pounds can put unnecessary strain on joints. It can also cause breathing difficulties and other conditions such as laminitis for horses and heart disease ❤️

Working together with your vet and a qualified nutritionist, we can put together a plan to get your pet to an appropriate weight for their breed 💪🏼

Luxating patella

This condition may be something you’ve seen whilst out on a a walk either from your own dog or one that’s just passing by!
The skipping movement is just one of many symptoms but it is the most noticeable! 🐕

Patella luxation is a dislocation of the patella from its normal groove. It’s a condition that is quite common in smaller breeds.

Severity is graded from 1 to 4. Grade 1 cases show luxation upon manual pressure but the patella usually stays where it’s meant to be. Grade 4 is a permanently dislocated patella. 🦵🏼

There are many treatments options for this condition. However, deciding which is suitable for your dog must be discussed with your vet! Some cases can be managed conservatively with physiotherapy to aid pain, and increase surrounding muscle strength to reduce occurrence of luxation. 💪🏼
