Essex Dementia Care

Essex Dementia Care http://www.essexdementiacare.org.uk/ Essex Dementia Care started in 2007, although we had a different name then. This is just the beginning. Charity No. 1129038.

We had done some research for the eight primary care trusts in Essex, looking for resources which might be available for people who were suffering from early onset dementia. We could find quite a few different services for people 70+, but very little that was suitable for fit and active people in their 50s and 60s – when early onset dementia usually starts. So we registered with the Care Quality Commission and began to develop a service of our own, designed with the needs of the younger person in mind, but able to accommodate the older person as well. What has evolved from those early days is a service of one-to-one care, companionship and support for the person with dementia, built around an active day which might be at home or out and about in the local community, and sometimes meeting up with others who have similar difficulties. You can read more about what we do in How We Can Help. Just recently, we have decided that it would serve the needs of our clients best if we became a charity, and to that end we have become a company and registered with the Charities Commission. We now have a solid team and a group of trustees with a very substantial expertise and experience of health and social care in Essex. We want to make a real difference to the lives of families living with dementia and with your help, your interest and involvement, we will. Essex Dementia Care is registered in England and Wales. Company No. 06820425.

The Church of our Saviour invited the Chelmer ‘Every Day Counts’ group to decorate a tree for an event called the ‘Christmas Tree Festival’ they are holding on the 29th of November. This was an opportunity for us to get creative and promote our charity to the local community.

Our clients assembled the tree and decorated it with a paperchain made up with EDC newsletters, skilfully cut to show photos and the EDC logo. After decorating, clients gathered for a photo to show off all the work. Everyone was thrilled with the finished look. The tree will be judged along with other hires of the church hall.

Andy vocals sang Christmas songs, as the group rocked around the Christmas tree.

The charity bingo night at the White Horse pub on Saturday was a great success. Many EDC staff plus locals attended and it was a sell out. So many local businesses had been generous donating prizes and loads of fun was had by all. Due to the amount of prizes, after playing 7 rounds of bingo, with people winning prizes for a line and full house in each game, a raffle was held to raffle off the remaining prizes.

Many EDC staff were lucky enough to win. A grand total of £687.90 was raised for EDC – a fantastic result for a few hours of fun.

An enormous THANK YOU must go to The White Horse staff, especially Elle and Sarah for running such a good night.

Mary and her ‘Memory Companion’ Kerry visited the Hanging Gardens in Writtle to have a look around at the Christmas decorations and planned to get lunch there but there were no tables available so they went to Costa instead. While there, they bumped into Kerry’s son and Mary was delighted to get to meet him, she thought he was Kerry’s brother – a lovely compliment!
