Dame Judi Dench has spent her life captivating audiences with her presence and her unmistakable talent...

But behind the scenes, her story in recent years has changed.

Diagnosed in 2012 with advanced age-related macular degeneration, Dame Judi Dench has gradually lost much of her central vision.

Today, everyday tasks many of us take for granted, reading, watching television, recognising faces and even moving around independent have been a challenge for her.

Despite this, she continues to work, memorising scripts through listening rather than reading, having to adapt. Her story is a reminder that vision loss doesn’t mean the end of independence, but it does mean learning new ways to live.

If you’re living with macular disease, here are some small changes we recommend that can make a big difference to your day to day life 👓

Adjusting to daily life with macular disease can feel challenging at times, but there are lots of simple ways to make things easier and more comfortable.

Using helpful aids like non-slip mats, reading stands, and large faced clocks or watches can make everyday tasks safer and easier to manage by improving visibility and making surfaces easier to feel.

When you’re out and about, you might find it useful to carry a symbol cane, a short white stick that lets others know you have a visual impairment. It can make navigating public spaces a little smoother and a lot safer.

Are you experiencing itchy eyes?

Hay fever season is just around the corner!

Hay fever can significantly affect the eyes, causing redness, itching, watering, swelling, and a burning sensation.

Eye drops can help reduce the allergic response, soothing irritation and help flush out allergens.

Take a look at the pollen calendar on the second slide, it will help you to prepare for seasonal allergic symptom onset.

The pollen season can being as early as February, dropping off in the month of September, but can continue into winter months also.

Symptomology is most prevalent during the summer months when tree, grass and w**d pollens peak.

We also offer a CUES service if you are struggling with symptoms, and can give specific advice and treatment tailor made for you.

Meet Darren - Our Dispensing Optician!

Darren is a key part of the Cumbrian Optical Company team and brings a great mix of professionalism and good humour to the practice!

He has 37 years of experience in optics, and previously worked at the practice when it was owned by Stephen Rowe!

He’s always up for a bit of banter in between helping patients, and helps keep the atmosphere light and welcoming throughout the day, we would be lost without him!

We’re very lucky to have him as part of the team... even if we do have to listen to his jokes every day!

Today, we are taking part in “Wear a Hat Day” at the opticians!

In honour of Brain Tumour Awareness Month, we are wearing hats to help raise awareness and show our support for those affected by brain tumours.

Brain tumours are serious, but with the right guidance, regular eye examinations, and appropriate checks, early signs can sometimes be detected.

As opticians, eye tests are about so much more than just checking your vision, they can also help identify underlying health concerns.

We are raising money all week, anyone wanting to donate can come in, and pop some money in our sparkly hat!

Recently, we experienced a powerful reminder of why thorough eye examinations are about so much more than sight.

A patient visited us with persistent headaches, and as part of our comprehensive assessment, we carefully evaluated ocular health and visual function.

Recognising that the symptoms warranted urgent medical attention, we referred the patient for further evaluation.

Following additional investigations, the patient was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Thankfully, the tumour was successfully removed, and the patient is now recovering.

This case highlights how symptoms such as:
• Persistent or unusual headaches
• Dizziness
• Balance difficulties
• Changes in vision

can sometimes indicate underlying neurological conditions that require immediate attention.

At our practice, patient care always comes first. We take the time to listen, to investigate thoroughly, and to act when something doesn’t feel right.

Early detection and timely referral can make a life-changing difference.
