Ann Ferguson - Physio Fundamentals

Ann Ferguson - Physio Fundamentals Experienced Physiotherapist with an interest in movement, breath work, muscle activation (CSP & HCPC registered)

As a physiotherapist with extensive experience in both NHS and private practice, I take a unique, whole-person approach to helping people overcome pain, recover from injury, and achieve their goals. My practice is grounded in the latest understanding of how pain is produced, informed by cutting-edge research in pain science and rehabilitation.

💡 What Sets My Approach Apart? Traditional physiotherapy often focuses solely on the physical aspects of injury or pain. I go beyond this, working to uncover the why behind your symptoms and providing a comprehensive pathway to recovery:

- Root Cause Focus: Whether you’re recovering from injury or dealing with chronic pain, I assess the underlying factors—like movement patterns, breathing mechanics, the role of your nervous system, and previous injury history.
- Pain Science Integration: Pain is complex, shaped by both your body and your brain. I incorporate the latest evidence to help you understand what’s happening and empower you with tools to move forward.
- Holistic Rehabilitation: Recovery isn’t just about healing a particular injury or area —it’s about the experience of the whole body. This may involve also addressing issues such as stress, emotional responses, and the nervous system’s role in how we experience pain and movement.
- Breathing and Biomechanics: Proper breathing and efficient movement are at the heart of my approach. These foundational elements enhance healing, restore balance, and build resilience.

✨ Rehabilitation & Recovery Tailored to You

Whether you’re looking to recover from an injury, break free from persistent pain, or return to peak performance, I provide a customised plan that works with your body, not against it. Through a graded exposure rehabilitation system, we’ll:

- Rebuild strength and confidence one step at a time.
- Rewire unhelpful movement patterns that may be holding you back.
- Aim to identify emotional or stress triggers that can amplify pain or slow recovery.
- Set meaningful, functional goals to get you back to what you love.

Clients often ask me for book recommendations to support their recovery and wellbeing journey. One of my favourites is The Way Out by Alan Gordon.

It’s an insightful and powerful read informed by the latest advances in the understanding of chronic pain. It would be helpful (possibly a game changer!) for anyone living with chronic pain, offering practical tools to help you take charge, calm your nervous system, and reclaim your life.

If you’re looking for something inspiring, supportive, and genuinely useful, this is a wonderful place to start. 🌿

When pain signals fire repeatedly, especially with emotion, attention, and fear, the brain strengthens the network that produce that pain. Over time, the pain becomes less about injury and more about neural patterns.

Pain rarely fires alone. It often co-activates fear, anxiety, attention, vigilance, and memory. These regions (amygdala, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex) wire together with sensory pain circuits. Over time, stress or fear alone can then trigger pain. Anticipating pain increases pain. And pain becomes self-reinforcing.

This knowledge helps inform PRT, a science-backed approach to healing!

This is awesome! Breath work is one of the most powerful tools we have for both mental and physical health. It is not the answer to everything but it is often overlooked and undervalued.

Fear, or anything under the "umbrella of fear", fuels pain. Fear includes anything that makes the brain feel threatened.

Perhaps you don't feel afraid of your pain...what word do you connect with under the umbrella of fear?

Totally agree! The language we use is so important.

When distinguishing between structural and mind-body symptoms, it is important to track consistency (or lack thereof). This provides valuable evidence: If a movement can be performed *even once* without pain, that means the tissue structure is *capable* of non-painful movement. The variable presence of pain therefore cannot be
explained structurally!

What's on your evidence list?

Why Ribcage Movement Matters (and yes — breathing too!)

Your ribcage isn’t just there to protect your lungs and heart. The way it moves, especially as you breathe, is fundamental to how the rest of your body functions.

When the ribcage moves well, it allows for:

🔵 Efficient breathing — supporting oxygen delivery and energy levels

🔵 Healthy organ function — the natural movement of the ribcage helps the diaphragm, heart, and digestive system work smoothly

🔵 Better posture & movement — ribcage mobility influences the spine, shoulders, and even the way your hips move

🔵 Reduced tension & pain — restrictions in ribcage motion can contribute to muscle tightness, back pain and limited flexibility. Breathing happens thousands of times a day and small limitations in ribcage mobility can have wide-reaching effects. Improving how your ribcage moves can unlock easier breathing, more fluid movement and support recovery from pain and fatigue.

At Physio Fundamentals, breath work and ribcage movement aren’t “extras, foundation of how your body works, heals and thrives.

When Pain Becomes More Than Physical

Did you know that if you’ve been in pain for three months or more, the way your brain processes it actually changes?

Chronic pain isn’t just about the original injury anymore. Over time, the brain area that registers pain shifts toward the emotional centres, meaning that stress, anxiety, or other emotional factors can
start to perpetuate or amplify your discomfort, even if the original injury has healed.

At Physio Fundamentals I understand that pain is both a physical and emotional experience.

That’s why our approach combines movement, rehabilitation, and nervous system strategies to help break the cycle, reduce sensitivity, and restore confidence in your body.

Pain doesn’t have to control your life. Understanding how your body and brain interact is the first step toward lasting recovery.
