Friends of Stracathro

Friends of Stracathro Friends of Stracathro started life as a campaign group.

The group fought for Stracathro Hospital to retain essential services, which were under threat of being removed, following the Acute Services Review in 1998. Whilst emergency care and services were centralised to Ninewells Hospital, other services were retained within Stracathro. When the campaigning had ended members of Friends of Stracathro were keen to be involved in the future of the hospital.

The group transformed into a fund-raising, charitable organisation, that works along with NHS Tayside, to enhance the experience of patients and staff within Stracathro Hospital. Friends of Stracathro organise fundraising events and have been extremely fortunate to receive donations from the public. In consultation with hospital staff, these funds are used to purchase equipment that is not part of NHS Tayside’s core equipment list, but which benefit patients. Friends of Stracathro have funded thousands of pounds worth of equipment, including cutting edge, highly technical equipment which improves patient outcomes and simple but effective items that have increased patient comfort and experience.

The following is an extract from an email we received from a patient who had a recent stay in the Surgical Unit, Stracathro.

Excellent feedback for the Surgical Unit team. Well done!

"I have just spent a couple of days at Stracathro having a new shoulder fitted. I didn't even know that such a possibility existed!
My reason for writing is to see what I can do in the way of a small "Thankyou" to the ward for the wonderful care and attention I was given whilst there. I have never seen such a busy team of nurses - and all so cheery and helpful.
I do understand that they all may have thought that they were only doing their job, but the calming effect they had on this concerned patient made it all so much easier for me. I have done some feedback through "Care Opinion" also.
I would like to ask if you would accept a donation from my wife and myself of £100 to be used for Stracathro Hospital. If it was within your ability to go along with this we would be very happy if it was able to be used specifically for the benefit of the ward I was in - the Day and Stay surgical unit under the leadership of SCN Morag Gray.

Can you help? Friends of Stracathro are looking for a venue to hold a pop-up shop. Somewhere in Montrose, Forfar or Brechin would be ideal and preferably rent free, as all money raised will be used to enhance the care and treatment of patients attending Stracathro Hospital. Please comment if you know of anywhere that is available.

Friends of Stracathro committee members handing over a Raizer II Lifting Chair to senior Charge Nurse Karen Dear from the Outpatients Department, Stracathro. This is a compact and portable piece of equipment. It will be used to raise patients, who have fallen or fainted, from the floor to a sitting position. This can be done gradually using the remote control and provides a safe, easy and dignified way to help these patients.

Friends of Stracathro have donated funds for two fistuloscopes, which will allow Video-Assisted A**l Fistula Treatment (VAAFT) for fistulas and sinuses. This new technique offers a minimally invasive surgical option, with the advantage that it can be performed as a day case and has an improved post-operative recovery period, compared with more invasive operations.

Peri-anal fistulas and pilonidal sinuses are common and troublesome conditions that can significantly impact on the quality of life of those affected. Some patients have required multiple surgeries, with the subsequent impact on their general health and their ability to work.

The patients of Tayside will benefit from this treatment in Stracathro Hospital, which will be the only centre In the East of Scotland to offer this innovation.
