What should you consider when looking for someone to give you a reading?
Firstly think about the terms "Psychic" and "Medium" which often appear to be used ad hoc or even used together to describe the Reader. In fact the two terms are very different and, when correctly used, describe very different types of reading.
A Psychic tunes into and translates the energy around people and places. A Psychic Reading would be a reading of the energy around you and would give you information about your past, present and future, any energy blockages, any negative energies etc how they are affecting you and how they could be dealt with.
A Medium is able to see, hear or sense those who are in Spirit using their "clair" or "light" senses (clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience). So a reading from a Medium would give you information about your loved ones in Spirit.
These are obviously two very different readings using very different gifts and so, whilst some Mediums may also have some psychic ability and some Psychics may also be sometimes able to contact Spirit, the two skills are not used together to give a reading. So, the first thing to look for when deciding on where to go for a reading is what sort of reading do you want? Then, and this sounds obvious but many people don't think of it, look at what the Reader is calling themselves - are they a Psychic or a Medium? This will give you a good idea of who you should approach to get the type of reading you want.
It goes without saying that anyone styling themselves a "Psychic Medium" doesn't understand the meaning of or the difference between these two terms. Most likely they will not have been trained nor tested and the quality of the reading they give will reflect this.
Although it isn't a legal requirement, most genuine readers will have asked to be tested by a reputable body such as the Spiritualist College, the Lucis Trust etc and, even though these skills are a gift, most will have sought training and guidance from other more experienced readers following the same spiritual path. If the person you contact for a reading has no "lineage" ie they have not had any training or accreditation, then the reading is not likely to be a good experience. Many readers claim to be self taught, which most of us are to a point, but just as you wouldn't trust a self taught doctor why trust a self taught psychic or medium?!
A good way of judging whether a reader is giving good quality readings is to look at how they organise their readings. A "real" psychic or medium would never put a time limit on a reading as they would never wish to stop the flow of information, from energy or Spirit, in midflow. Most readers will allow an hour for a reading but will expect that sometimes readings last much longer. If a reader is allowing 30 minutes for a reading and is booking another client in after that time then there is no way they are giving real readings of any variety! Equally, a reader who stops a reading after the allotted time, whether or not the flow of information has stopped, is not giving a decent reading. I have heard of readers doing this and then urging clients to pay extra to find out what else had "come through" for them! The charge made for a reading should be for as long as information keeps coming and not for a fixed length of time. Any reader who claims to be able to give a reading in half an hour is to be avoided - there is no way that a good link can be established and everything relayed to the client in such a short space of time.
Genuine psychics and mediums will admit that, sometimes, the information simply doesn't come through. Reading for someone is a bit like an internet connection - most times it's good and you can download what you need but at others the signal is weak or disappears altogether. In this situation a genuine reader will explain and arrange a sitting on another day or perhaps at a different venue, making no charge for the failed reading. A reader who never notices any difference in their connection is not a genuine reader.
Many readers will use tarot or angel cards during their readings, usually to illustrate or give a framework to the reading. What a genuine reader will never do is assemble their readings by reading the words or phrases printed on the cards. When used for readings, the images on cards need to speak to our subconscious giving further insight into the information that is coming through and thus will mean completely different things to different people. If a reader conducts their readings by simply reading out what is on the cards and then stating that this somehow links to the client, their life or situation then they are not using psychic or mediumistic gifts at all. When I teach the use of oracle cards, lesson 1 starts with "take the cards ot of their box and throw away the little book of meanings"!! When used correctly cards are a valuable tool but anyone can read out what is printed on some cards and anyone who does so is neither a psychic nor a medium.
Most readers make a charge for their time, especially if they have given up full time work to focus entirely on doing readings. Some people feel that, as the gift is given freely so readings should be free. In fact most reputable readers offer their time to charities and fundraising events free of charge and most would give a free reading to someone in need if they cold not afford it. The fact is that the client is paying for the readers time and not the reading itself. So, how much should you be charged? Most readers charge £20-£30 for a reading which will last at least an hour. Inexperienced readers who are being trained or mentored will charge a nominal fee of around £5 for a reading as the quality of the reading will not be as high and the reader is learning from the experience. Any reader charging more than £30 or charging for readings of less than an hour should be avoided as, once reading becomes a money making exercise, the link with Spirit usually weakens or even disappears altogether.
So when looking for a reader you need to decide what sort of reading you want - of your own energy and energies around you or of Spirit and your loved ones in Spirit? Then you need to look for either a Psychic (energy reading) or a Medium (Spirit reading) - NEVER a "Psychic Medium"!! Who charges around £20-£30 for a reading of at least an hour and who has space in their schedule to allow a reading to run over time. If a friend or someone you know has been to this reader, did they use cards and, if so, did they simply read the words printed on them? If the information didn't flow, did they not charge for the reading and arrange the reading for another day? When you meet the reader, ask them who has trained and tested them. Genuine readers will have no problem with you asking and no hesitation in telling you.
