If your job depends on taste… your ear surgery consent form should too.
Ear Surgery can be life-changing. But for some professions, it can also be career-changing — and not in a good way.
If you’re a chef or a sommelier (wine, coffee, spirits… anything sensory), you should be specifically warned about the possibility of persistent taste disturbance after surgery — including symptoms that can last beyond 12 months.
Because for you, “minor” side-effects aren’t minor.
They’re work function.
So before anyone signs on the dotted line, YOU should be asking:
✅ Is there a non-surgical option that achieves the goal?
For some patients, other routes of auditory rehabilitation may be more appropriate — for example PSAPs (Personal Sound Amplification Products / Hearing Aids) as an interim or alternative step.
And if you still want surgery?
Then consent should be upgraded from generic to profession-specific:
📌 A clear term that explains the risk of loss of work function (taste-dependent performance) after the procedure.
Bottom line:
Consent isn’t just about the operation.
It’s about your life after it — including your livelihood.
💬 Are you in a taste-critical profession? Would this change your decision-making?
