Match Report: Briton Ferry RFC v Cefn Cribwr RFC
Cefn Cribwr made the short trip west to face Briton Ferry at a crucial stage of the season, with results now taking on added importance. Full credit must go to the home club, who worked tirelessly overnight to ensure the fixture went ahead despite a week of horrendous weather.
In front of a bumper crowd, Cefn played down the slope in the first half and looked to capitalise early. They started brightly, but it was the Ferry who opened the scoring with an early penalty to take a 3โ0 lead. A superb turnover from flanker Anthony Burnell then prevented a certain try for the home side and proved a key moment in the game.
Cefn grew into the match, with captain Tom Carpenterโs intelligent kicking putting the Riders in strong positions.
Pressure from an attacking lineout a weapon all afternoon, led by ho**er Harri Williams and second row Jacob Goodwin eventually told. The pack drove the Ferry back some 30 yards before winger Alex Underhill pounced from close range to score. Carpenter added the extras to make it 7โ3.
The Riders were now playing some excellent, flowing rugby in difficult conditions. Crisp handling between backs and forwards allowed winger Bailey John to finish a superb team try. Carpenter again converted, sending Cefn into the break with a deserved 14โ3 lead.
Cefn knew the second half would be a real test playing up the slope, but from the restart they stepped up another gear. Led by talisman Lloyd Allen, the Riders dominated the set piece, consistently taking the Ferry pack apart. Strong carrying from Lewis Rees and Dylan Jones-Thomas kept the home defence under relentless pressure.
To their credit, the young Ferry side stayed in the fight and frustrated Cefn with determined defence. After multiple phases, a clever cross-kick found young fullback Ieuan Allen, who took the ball at full pace to score an excellent try, extending the lead to 19โ3.
At this stage it was all Cefn. Centres Lewis Anderson and Ifan Rossiter continued to knock on the door, and another well-judged kick from Carpenter led to the next score. Rossiter showed great awareness to outsmart the Ferry defence and dive over under the posts. Carpenter added the conversion to make it 26โ3.
Cefn emptied the bench, with a welcome return for Felix Sarup, who enjoyed a lively 15-minute cameo. The contest became increasingly scrappy, but the Ferry never stopped competing and were rewarded with a deserved try five minutes from time.
The match ended with Cefn defending their line, repelling a final onslaught from the Ferry in a bruising closing set that summed up the physical nature of this Cefn band of brothers.
A strong and important away victory for the Riders against a spirited Ferry side at a crucial point in the season.
