On a day when many could have been rewarded with the Man of the Match award, it was young fullback Ieuan Allen who stood out, looking dangerous whenever he had the ball in hand and capping his performance with a superbly taken try.

Match Report: Briton Ferry RFC v Cefn Cribwr RFC

Cefn Cribwr made the short trip west to face Briton Ferry at a crucial stage of the season, with results now taking on added importance. Full credit must go to the home club, who worked tirelessly overnight to ensure the fixture went ahead despite a week of horrendous weather.

In front of a bumper crowd, Cefn played down the slope in the first half and looked to capitalise early. They started brightly, but it was the Ferry who opened the scoring with an early penalty to take a 3โ€“0 lead. A superb turnover from flanker Anthony Burnell then prevented a certain try for the home side and proved a key moment in the game.

Cefn grew into the match, with captain Tom Carpenterโ€™s intelligent kicking putting the Riders in strong positions.

Pressure from an attacking lineout a weapon all afternoon, led by ho**er Harri Williams and second row Jacob Goodwin eventually told. The pack drove the Ferry back some 30 yards before winger Alex Underhill pounced from close range to score. Carpenter added the extras to make it 7โ€“3.

The Riders were now playing some excellent, flowing rugby in difficult conditions. Crisp handling between backs and forwards allowed winger Bailey John to finish a superb team try. Carpenter again converted, sending Cefn into the break with a deserved 14โ€“3 lead.

Cefn knew the second half would be a real test playing up the slope, but from the restart they stepped up another gear. Led by talisman Lloyd Allen, the Riders dominated the set piece, consistently taking the Ferry pack apart. Strong carrying from Lewis Rees and Dylan Jones-Thomas kept the home defence under relentless pressure.

To their credit, the young Ferry side stayed in the fight and frustrated Cefn with determined defence. After multiple phases, a clever cross-kick found young fullback Ieuan Allen, who took the ball at full pace to score an excellent try, extending the lead to 19โ€“3.

At this stage it was all Cefn. Centres Lewis Anderson and Ifan Rossiter continued to knock on the door, and another well-judged kick from Carpenter led to the next score. Rossiter showed great awareness to outsmart the Ferry defence and dive over under the posts. Carpenter added the conversion to make it 26โ€“3.

Cefn emptied the bench, with a welcome return for Felix Sarup, who enjoyed a lively 15-minute cameo. The contest became increasingly scrappy, but the Ferry never stopped competing and were rewarded with a deserved try five minutes from time.

The match ended with Cefn defending their line, repelling a final onslaught from the Ferry in a bruising closing set that summed up the physical nature of this Cefn band of brothers.

A strong and important away victory for the Riders against a spirited Ferry side at a crucial point in the season.

The โ€˜Ridersโ€™ are back on the road this weekend as they travel to face Briton Ferry RFC.

Following two excellent training sessions in wet conditions this week, the squad has been boosted by the return of several familiar faces.

In the starting XV, Ieuan Allen comes back in at fullback, while Cam Steele is named at scrum-half.

There is also welcome news on the bench, with Daf Jones, Connor Walker and Felix Sarup all returning to the matchday squad. Ewan Orchard, who has impressed since joining the club, is also ready to make an impact off the bench .

Match Report: Cefn Cribwr RFC v Crynant RFC

Unfortunately, our home fixture against Crynant RFC was abandoned after 25 minutes due to an injury. At the time of the stoppage, Cefn Cribwr RFC were leading 21โ€“0.

Tries were scored by David โ€œDidsโ€ Thomas and Ant Burnell, who crossed the line twice. All three tries were successfully converted by Tom Carpenter.

Our thoughts and best wishes go to the injured Crynant player, and we hope to see him make a full and speedy recovery.

A huge thank you goes to Sasha, our club physio, who treated the Crynant player with the utmost professionalism throughout, and to Tony Millington for his assistance until the emergency services arrived.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the boys, and our sincere apologies that the match could not be completed.

Cefn Cribwr v Maesteg โ€“ Match Report

In what could only be described as a crucial Division 4 West encounter, the Riders made the short journey up the Llynfi Valley to face league leaders Maesteg. The match beat the weather, and conditions at the Old Parish were perfect for an afternoon of rugby.

Cefn Cribwr fielded a strong side but knew they faced a stern challenge against a confident Maesteg team. Credit to the home side, they burst out of the blocks and dominated much of the early exchanges. True to the Ridersโ€™ character this season, Cefn stayed in the fight despite sustained pressure.

After the first quarter, the home side led 3โ€“0, and on the half-hour mark Maesteg crossed for the first try of the match to extend their lead to 10โ€“0.

Having weathered the early storm, the Riders gradually grew into the game. Some excellent interpassing between forwards and backs began to stretch the Maesteg defence. Sustained pressure eventually paid off when scrum-half Marcus David dived over from five yards out to get Cefn on the scoreboard.

Half-time: Maesteg 10โ€“5 Cefn Cribwr

Despite Maesteg enjoying the majority of possession and territory, the Riders remained very much in the contest at the break.

The second half started solidly for Cefn, but following the breakdown of a promising attack, Maesteg struck decisively, running nearly 60 metres to score under the posts.

17โ€“5

Cefn responded well. A clever kick through from David was gathered by replacement full-back Scott Walker, who finished a well-worked move to bring the Riders back into the game.

17โ€“10

The contest was finely balanced at this stage, but missed chances from the boys from Cae Gof proved costly. Maesteg capitalised, scoring the next try before adding a final score with the last play of the afternoon to seal the result.

Full-time: Maesteg 31โ€“10 Cefn Cribwr

Full credit to Maesteg, who deserved the win, and we wish them the very best for the remainder of the season. The Riders will dust themselves off and go again next week as they return home to face Crynant.

With no First XV fixture this week, it was the Second XV who kept the Cae Gof faithful entertained, taking on a well-established Tondu 3rd team in an agreed friendly fixture.

The Riders had no fewer than 25 players available, a real testament to the growing depth and development within the club. The squad was a healthy mix of youth and experience, featuring many of the faces involved in the previous victory over Bridgend Sports 2nds.

On an extremely cold but beautiful afternoon for rugby, it was the Riders who took the spoils with a strong all-round performance.

Tries came from Nathan Hopkins, Cam Steele, John Brace and Phil Burnell, with Lewis Anderson converting three of the four to secure a deserved 26โ€“10 victory.

Player Coach Jeff Jones was delighted to record five wins from five against a well-drilled Tondu side. He praised winger Daf Jones for his strong tackling, while Darris Lyddon was singled out for his relentless work rate on both sides of the ball. Behind a dominant Riders scrum, backs Lewis Anderson and fellow centre Mathew Burnell were jointly awarded Man of the Match.

A big thank you to Simon Suss Thomas and Justin Rees The Swan Aberkenfig for sponsoring the men of the match.

Credit must go to Tondu, who managed to field three full squads on the day โ€” an incredible achievement for any club. Hats off, boys.

Next week the First XV return to action with a trip up the Llynfi Valley to face Maesteg in a top-of-the-table clash. Your support will be needed.
