Travelling Abroad for More Than 3 Months

If you are planning to travel or live outside the UK for more than 3 months, please read the following important information about how the NHS can support your medication needs. The advice below has been provided by the British Medical Association.
________________________________________
βœ… NHS Rules on Supplying Medication for Travel
β€’ The NHS and practice will supply medication for temporary travel abroad of up to 3 months.
β€’ If you're going away for longer than 3 months, the NHS can only provide enough medication to allow you to travel safely and arrange an alternative supply at your destination.
β€’ Issuing of extended prescriptions for controlled drugs will need to be discussed with the practice.
β€’ NHS prescriptions must not be obtained by friends or family on behalf of someone who is already abroad, even if the patient:
o Owns property in the UK.
o Pays UK taxes.
________________________________________
πŸ’Š What You Need to Do
β€’ Contact your GP well in advance of travel to discuss your medication plan.
β€’ If you're away for over 3 months, you'll need to:
o Register with a local healthcare provider in your destination country to continue your treatment.
________________________________________
⚠️ Important Travel Notes
β€’ Patients are responsible for ensuring that any drugs they take into a country conform to local laws.
β€’ Always:
o Carry medication in original packaging.
o Bring a copy of your prescription and a GP letter if needed (there will be a fee for letters required for travel)
o Pack medicines in your hand luggage for easy access during travel.
________________________________________
πŸ“ž Need Help?
If you’re unsure what steps to take or need documentation for your trip, please speak to your GP or practice team as early as possible.

On Thursday the 17th of July 2025, Bridgend Group Practice will be switching to the Electronic Prescription Service. This is a free, secure NHS service and instead of printing and signing paper prescriptions, we will send them electronically to the pharmacy of your choice.

What does it mean for me?

It's easier. Your prescription no longer needs to be collected from the Surgery and taken to your pharmacy. It will be sent electronically.

It saves time. If you have a phone appointment with the Surgery, you won’t have to come to the Surgery just to pick up the prescription. Your pharmacy will still need a little time to get your items ready, just as they do now.

It is safe and secure. Your prescription cannot get lost, as we can always see on our system where it is.

What do I need to do?

Speak to your pharmacy and tell them that you want to use electronic prescriptions. They will arrange this for you. You don’t need a computer, smartphone or laptop. Order your prescriptions in the usual way. The only change is that you will no longer get a green paper prescription. This reduction in paper will also help the environment.
