I donโt know why I suddenly felt the need to write this, and itโs a bit more personal than most of my posts on here, but perhaps thereโs someone out there that needs to hear it right now?
Thereโs so much pressure on kids leaving school, and having to decide their direction in life, college, uni, deciding on a career they want for the next 40+ years. If youโre young and just donโt know, or if you feel stuck and wish youโd taken a different direction, itโs never too late.
I was never great in school for many reasons. A lot was due to my own poor mental health at the time. I wasnโt interested and never worked hard. My โrevision timeโ was mainly spent in the pub and I remember my entire revision for my English GCSE was sitting on the swing before school reading the front and back page of pride and prejudice and hoping it would get me through (it didnโt).
One of my clearest memories of picking up A Level results (which I did because I had no idea what else to do) was opening my envelope, seeing an โEโ which was barely a pass (not surprisingly), and hearing a girl who failed say in a horrified voice โeven Nic passedโ.
After a few college courses and jobs, still not really sure of my direction, I decided I wanted to be a nurse. I qualified at 24 and it was many years later I decided to go and do a degree module after being encouraged to do so. It had been many years since I last studied, with many personal struggles knocking my confidence in myself, and what I was capable of. Despite my doubts, I passed the module, then another, and got the confidence to complete my degree, shortly followed by post graduate study to become a therapist.
We all have different situations and Iโm not saying itโs always easy. However if confidence is holding you back, or you think the decisions you made at 16-18 have to define your working life for the next 40 years, it doesnโt. During my nurse training I was studying with people in their 40s and 50โs who went on to become some of the best nurses.
Sometimes we feel stuck, and sometimes change is scary, we think weโre not good enough, or itโs hard to see the end in sight, but wherever you are in life we have a choice and a right to move in the direction that makes us happy or fulfilled. There may be setbacks, at times it may be 1 step forward and 2 back, but itโs never too late.
