What is a doula?

There are different kinds of doula, but mostly being a doula is all about supporting you and your family.

A doula is an experienced person who has completed relevant qualifications to enhance her understanding, who takes her lead from the client to support their transition to parenthood.

A doula gives support, in the form of information, practical support, and emotional support. She also supports the rest of the family, depending on need.

The doula nurtures the client, is warm and approachable, non-judgemental, and respects the wishes of the client.

A doula does not impose her opinions on her client. A doula does not act as a medical professional. A doula does not get in the way.

Birth doulas support women through birth, being on call for an extended period for whenever that may be.

Postnatal doulas support women afterwards, for varying lengths of time, depending on need.
