Behind Mothers Goodies

Mothers Goodies was born from reigniting a childhood hobby, a love of beautiful products & trying to survive on a very limited budget. How things have changed: So, in 2011 I worked, as I had done for 15 years previously, in the dental industry, lots of commuting, frightened patients, cosmetic dentistry, implantology & a good wage. That was my life, it was safe to say, I thought my future. In 2012 everything changed. I fell pregnant with our son. The pregnancy was difficult & as a result, I took early maternity. Our son was born 6 weeks early & it was obvious early on returning to work was not going to be easy or simple. I had never had time on my hands or spent so much time at home, my life before consisted of travelling, strict routine & long hours. The lack of the rat race was foreign & I needed a distraction between the nappy changes, crying & caring. A hobby, candle making. I enjoyed candle making as a child & had always wanted to learn to make soap also. The hobby was born: I began making candles with paraffin wax, I soon decided I didn't like that!. After the horrid fumes it gave off & my Mom being unable to use any of my creations due to it being a trigger for her asthma I discovered soy wax. Every spare moment I had I made candles, T lights & melts. I learnt to make soap, bath lotions, bath bombs & researched local suppliers for essential oils & cruelty-free ingredients. We could no longer use the dining table, that was where my creations lived. Not all was rosy: Returning to work was becoming a distant memory as months passed. My job didn't accommodate part-time & I wasn't prepared to return to a 60 hour week with a 5-month-old child. We made the decision as a couple that I would stay at home until the right opportunity came along, Our son came first. With that decision came less money, more stress & a totally different lifestyle. Long gone were the days of holidays, expensive perfume & honestly, wasteful living. We moved into a smaller house, sold one of our cars, eBay and FREE sites became our best friends. Help from family and friends was becoming more regular & life was really hard. Fast-forward on 2 years: I created a name for myself “Mothers Goodies”, I was the Mother Creating the goodies so it seemed fitting. I was now attending regular craft fairs & I was selling out fast!. I saved up & had a website created & started to stock local craft shops. I soon realised this had become my “NEW job” & I was loving it. I was earning money again, having fun but most of all creating products that EVERYONE could afford & enjoy. Nice things should not be JUST for people that earn a lot of money. The higher the price tag shouldn't & doesn't always mean BETTER. I can't say struggling was enjoyable but it taught me a lot. It taught me to appreciate things a lot more. It taught me how embarrassing it is to walk into a shop unable to afford the cheapest of items. It made me angry but gave me the passion to break that mould of all handmade, vegan free or high-quality skincare MUST be expensive. We are now almost 7 years on & Mothers Goodies is going strong. We have amazing customers, I have amazing staff & of course a very supporting family. If you haven't already visited the shop you should!. Everything is reasonably priced, most items are handmade (by me). I now stock items for budding crafters, as many did for me. I take cruelty-free, ethically sourced & fair trade very seriously & make sure I recycle & use recycled wherever possible. I am no longer wasteful & I will never be rich, but I am happy & I make others happy. That payment enough :-)
