Does a dog have Buddha nature asks an old koan? Master Dogen argued that a dog IS Buddha nature. She has minimal conditioning by language. She doesn’t pretend to be anything else. She doesn’t wish to be some other place. She lives in just this time, here and now. A yappy little bodhisattva preaching the dharma.

Oneness in Action: The Moon is a favourite metaphor in Zen. It often represents wholeness or realisation. Sometimes, the term “Two Moons” is used to describe divided consciousness. We often divide our mind into “the thinker” or “doer” and “the one who watches and comments on the thinker or doer.”
However an important principle in Buddhism is “Oneness in Action.” When we act completely, and when we sit zazen completely, there is no division. No divided consciousness and no subject and object. This is different from thinking and is also known as “Hishiryo.”

Everyday activity: Everyday activity is the profound truth of Buddhism. Cleaning, tidying, brushing teeth, cooking are all “action in the present moment.”They are examples of the balanced state, with no separation between body and mind. They are complete in themselves and lack nothing. In zazen we practice this balanced state.

If we want to study small things we can use a magnifying glass. If we want to study the stars we use a telescope. If we want to study the self we use zazen. Master Dogen described zazen as "jijuyu zanmai" the samadhi of receiving and using the self. We do not need to rely on the opinions of others. We rely on our own body and mind in this moment.

We are not our thoughts: The problem is that we believe we are. We are enticed by grand images of ourselves or else brow-beaten by imaginary versions of our perceived failings. We easily fool ourselves into believing our thoughts are reality. But when we sit zazen we realise that thoughts are just thoughts.

Suffering: Suffering is often the distance between how things are and how we think they should be. We sometimes live in the world of ideas. Our ideas can be beautiful and the world doesn't match the images in our heads. When we carry out simple actions the difference between the internal and external world can disappear.

Zazen is not meditation: We often see the word "meditation" used to describe our practice. To many people the word suggest trying to control the mind by applying a particular "technique" There are many different techniques out there with many goals, e.g. trying to clear the mind, visualize, count breaths, reach special states etc.
In zazen there is no goal. We just make an effort to sit with correct, balanced posture. When we do this we experience our raw selves.

Action in the present moment.
You can’t escape this present moment. It’s the only time that exists, but that doesn’t stop many of us trying to spend time in our heads reliving the past, or worrying about the future. Master Dogen revered action and action always happens in this moment now. In zazen we can notice when we are lost in thought of the past or future and return ourself to our simple action. From birth to death is only This.
