Planning ahead for Christmas with elderly parents or relatives
The festive season is a special time of year - a chance to connect, come together, and share memories and traditions โค๏ธ
However, for older relatives, particularly those living with dementia, Christmas can be stressful and emotionally challenging, sometimes feeling overwhelming or unsettling.
A little planning can help make Christmas calmer, more comfortable, and more inclusive for everyone.
Here are some tips to help you prepare:
๐ฐ๏ธ Keep familiar routines where possible
Regular mealtimes, rest periods, and daily habits can provide reassurance during a busy time of year.
๐ Plan essentials in advance
With reduced GP, pharmacy, and shop opening hours over Christmas, it helps to organise prescriptions, food, and other necessities early.
โจ Adapt traditions rather than changing everything
You might shorten visits, celebrate earlier in the day, or simplify activities so your loved one can still take part comfortably.
๐ Include them in gentle festive tasks
Wrapping presents, sorting cards, or helping with decorations can offer a sense of involvement and enjoyment.
๐ฝ๏ธ Be mindful around food
Familiar meals, smaller portions, and quieter mealtimes may feel more manageable than large gatherings.
๐ถ Create calm moments
If things become busy, spending quiet time together - listening to music, looking at photos, or watching a favourite film - can be comforting.
Above all, remember that Christmas doesnโt have to be perfect ๐
Focusing on comfort, familiarity, and small moments of togetherness can make the season meaningful for everyone.
