As we celebrate our 20th birthday today, we wanted to highlight one of the many lives we've helped to change over the past 20 years. This is Christian's story! 📖
Christian asked us to share his story and to tell others how happy he is since moving into the community with the right support. Christian has been supported through a carefully planned transition focused on creating a sustainable and fulfilling life in the community.
Background and Previous Experiences 🌟
Since 1999, Christian lived in residential and hospital settings, becoming institutionalised through long periods of care that limited choice and autonomy. Any move into the community therefore needed to be carefully paced and responsive to what would work best for Christian.
What Mattered to Christian 🌟
Through meaningful dialogue, a Good Life Plan was developed based on loving relationships, autonomy, economic security, contribution, self-esteem, a home of his own, and feeling safe and secure. 🏡
Christian’s Home and Community Life 🏡
Christian initially moved into a rented flat, creating stability and space to settle and build confidence. Over the following year, Christian was actively involved in choosing his forever home. Around a year later, he moved into his own permanent flat, a major milestone reflecting growing autonomy, confidence, and genuine choice! 👏
Living in his chosen community has enabled Christian to build routines, access local amenities, and take pride in his home!
Supporting Christian Well 🤝
Good support for Christian starts with understanding him as a person. Christian is described as warm, humorous, and kind. Years of institutional care shaped how he views relationships, so support actively focuses on equality, autonomy, and emotional safety.
Most of the team have supported Christian since his initial move into the community, providing continuity, trust, and reassurance. This consistency has been central to Christian’s progress and sense of security.
Christian’s Life Today – What He Enjoys and What He Has Achieved 🌟
Christian enjoys being part of his local community and is well known at the local pub, where staff and regulars greet him by name and look out for him! 🎱🎯🍻
At home, Christian enjoys word searches, puzzles, and playing pool. He also takes part in everyday household tasks such as cleaning and laundry, and particularly enjoys making drinks and cups of tea for the staff team, reflecting pride in his home and natural sociability. 🧹🫖🍵
These everyday activities are significant achievements, showing a life that is ordinary, self-directed, and meaningful. 🤩
What This Case Study Shows Us About Good Care 🌟
Christian’s story shows that good care is built on listening, choice, dignity, patience, consistency, and belief, creating opportunities for meaningful everyday lives.
