Having a baby is the best experience ever. Lots of changes are inevitable some of which are - "You can be invisible to each other.
Even though you’re both there, it’s hard to see each other through the little ones in between.
It’s easy to forget that you each have your own needs and needs to each other when you’re in the thick of it.
You can be in the same room for hours and not see each other through the chaos, or in the car for long trips but not hear each other through the noise.
The focus of your attention is rarely on each other anymore.
While you’re packing the car frantically because you’re running late, you forget to tell them how nice they look in their new shirt and they forget to tell you that they like your hair like that.
While you’re sorting the children and they’re trying to get out the door for work you forget to wish them well for their big day and they forget to give you a kiss goodbye.
While you message them about the baby wipes or the money you need transferred, you forget to ask how their day is going and they forget to click send on their reply.
While you complain to each other about being tired or needing a break, you forget to do that important thing for them and they forget to use your favourite mug when making your coffee.
While you chew their ear off about what you did all day and they can’t wait to tell you about an upcoming boys’ trip, you forget to hear the importance of each other’s needs, just the impact on your own.
And as you leave an empty space in the bed to have some you time while they spend time with the children, you forget to tell them how grateful you are for them, and they forget to tell you how much they appreciate you.
Parenting.
It can make you forgetful and blind. You forget to see each other some days and it can feel like you are connected through some form of disconnection.
Even so, it’s one of the most fulfilling chapters you’ll go through together. And when you remember to see each other for yourselves and what you both are for the little ones in between, even for the shortest time, it leaves your heart feeling full and your connection feeling the deepest it’s been for the longest time.
Until next time, when, once again, you need to remember xx

Did you know that babies are born with over 75 primal instincts that help them survive and thrive? Just a few examples are the rooting and gag reflexes that help baby latch to breastfeed while protecting her from choking, the startle reflex - when baby hears a loud noise or feels his neck unsupported - he ‘reaches out to grab on - “righting,” in which, if baby finds herself on her tummy, will turn her head to one side so that she can breathe. And the list goes on.

One reflex that’s always amazing to witness is ‘the breast crawl.” Many babies, when placed on mama’s abdomen or chest after birth, instinctively crawl to their mother’s ni**le, guided by the primal attraction of a baby to her own mother’s unique milk scent. It’s a powerful mammalian response. The steps of the breast crawl were even documented by neonatologist Marshall Klaus, who studied maternal-newborn bonding.

It’s so easy to get completely overwhelmed and fearful that we have no idea what our babies need. Is she okay? Will he eat? Is she sleeping enough, pooping enough? What are those sounds he’s making? And yes - it’s an absolutely steep learning curve that can feel quite mysterious at the beginning.

One way to center yourself in the midst of overwhelm is to take a minute, step back, and remember that you are a dyad - an interconnected unit made for each other. Although society has trained us to view newborns as completely helpless and moms as needing a team of experts to tell us what to do - and yes, help and guidance from those who have walked this path can help lighten the load - but just as our newborns have at least 75 instincts - you have innate wisdom, too. The more you learn to trust those whispers coming from deep within yourself - the louder and clearer they will become. It’s like a muscle - except this muscle has been working out since the very first human baby was brought to her mama’s chest. You’ve got this - you are the expert on your own baby.

“When pregnant, the cells of the baby migrate into the mothers bloodstream and then circle back into the baby, it’s called “fetal-maternal microchimerism”.

For 41 weeks, the cells circulate and merge backwards and forwards, and after the baby is born, many of these cells stay in the mother’s body, leaving a permanent imprint in the mothers tissues, bones, brain, and skin, and often stay there for decades. Every single child a mother has afterwards will leave a similar imprint on her body, too.

Even if a pregnancy doesn't go to full term or if you have an abortion, these cells still migrate into your bloodstream.

Research has shown that if a mother's heart is injured, fetal cells will rush to the site of the injury and change into different types of cells that specialize in mending the heart.

The baby helps repair the mother, while the mother builds the baby.

How cool is that?

This is often why certain illnesses vanish while pregnant.

It’s incredible how mothers bodies protect the baby at all costs, and the baby protects & rebuilds the mother back - so that the baby can develop safely and survive.

Think about crazy cravings for a moment. What was the mother deficient in that the baby made them crave?

Studies have also shown cells from a fetus in a mothers brain 18 years after she gave birth. How amazing is that?”

If you’re a mom you know how you can intuitively feel your child even when they are not there….Well, now there is scientific proof that moms carry them for years and years even after they have given birth to them.

I find this to be so very beautiful.

**SCAN UPDATE**
We are pleased to announce that from Monday 28th September 2020 one additional supportive adult can attend for all pregnancy scans at LTHT.
Due to the layout of some of our waiting areas, your partner/ additional adult may be required to wait outside of the department, but will be able to accompany you once you are shown to the scanning room. This is to allow for social distancing measures. As with all hospital outpatient areas, we ask that face coverings are worn by all attending the scan department, and that those attending are not experiencing symptoms of coronavirus, awaiting a test result or in a period of self-isolation.
We will continue to monitor this, as we do with all visiting restriction, taking account of local trends in Covid-19 incidence and prevalence and the current national pandemic risk and government policy.
