The top five birthwork / pregnancy books always on my bedside table - Birth Work as Care work, collated by Alana Apfel. This is my number one birth work book, a beautiful collection of stories from the world of birth, on why activism in birth is a necessity. Gifted to me by my wonderful friend Laura when I became a doula. Would highly recommend.

View from the beach where we’re staying for the next few weeks.

The island is Kapiti Island, where my granddad’s ashes are scattered. It’s also where I’m headed for a yoga retreat next month with .awa.journey v excited, especially about the kiwis 😊

Balance is so important in life, not just emotionally and philosophically, but physically too, especially in pregnancy. I’d really recommend looking at the Spinning Babies website if you’re a pregnant person, you’ll find lots of great resources on how to create balance and space for a shorter, more positive birth

I love hearing stories like this from my hypnobirthing clients after their babies are born! This particular client is based in America, where there is of course a super-medicalised, obstetrician-led system. It can be hard to maintain control over your labour in such a system, and do it your way, but R did it! She did it on her terms. It’s always to wonderful to hear clients use words like ‘great’ to describe their labour ☺️(Posted with permission)
If you’re pregnant, consider seeking out positive birth stories like R’s, they’re a wonderful boost. I’d love to hear more stories like this – share below if you care to ☺️

I have a few spaces left on my January course – DM for a last minute £25/$50 off!

Current reading. A beautiful NZ book about motherhood, young pregnancy, shame, access to abortion (read: governments’ intentional denial of access to basic and essential healthcare of female bodied people). A Christmas pressie from my beau.

Psychologist and founder of Person-Centered Therapy, Carl Rogers, is credited with developing Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR), as one of his ‘core conditions’ of therapeutic change. I love this principle and always aim to work from a place of UPR.

It means withholding judgement at all times, and this is an important tenet of being a doula. It is not for us to pass judgement or give opinions on any of your choices. It’s not even for us to advise you. It is for us to listen to you, hear you, and go with you on your journey. To walk along side you and be a sounding board if needed.

Carl Rogers ‘On Becoming A Person’ is a wonderful read if you’re interested in learning more.

The other ‘core conditions’ are congruence, and empathy, both of which are also central to my work as a doula.

Stress, tension and trauma can-and often is-all be stored in the body, so movement, release and dancing and are super important throughout our lives, to help release tension and allow energy to flow more positively.

We can use movement to encourage positive energy in the body and to release negative energy, as well as to encourage flexibility and strength.

During pregnancy, movement - within your own individual abilities - is generally encouraged and can increase flexibility and support a more straightforward birth. Dancing is also a great oxytocin booster ;)

Kia Ora (hello) from Aotearoa (New Zealand)

We’ve landed in Auckland where we’ll be living for the forseeable. I’m half kiwi so am looking forward to connecting with whanau (family) and whenua (land).

We’ll mostly be based in Auckland, and I’ll be taking on doula clients here, whilst my hypnobirthing work will remain online, so I can try and support a mixture of UK and NZ clients.

If you’re in Aotearoa and interested in doula support, or know someone who is please get in touch 🌀

Some lovely words from a previous hypnobirthing course attendee

Hypnobirthing can’t (and shouldn’t) promise that it can give you the exact outcome you hope for, but it can increase your chances of achieving that outcome by preparing and informing you, and supporting you to advocate for the choices you want. It can also help you to manage changes in plans and ride the wild waves of birthing with more resilience and support around you.

Image ID: a peach and blue background with baby blue text that reads ‘it was the mindset work that really helped, I’m really grateful to you for that. The course got me into a mindset where I felt able to cope with whatever outcome we got’
