🏳️‍🌈 Trailblazing wellness: Magnus Hirschfeld (he/him)

This LGBT+ History Month, we’re honouring the LGBTQIA+ figures who shaped the wellness industry we know today — and whose legacies continue to influence the affirming, inclusive care our communities need today.

✨ Magnus Hirschfeld (1868–1935) was a gay, Jewish physician and one of the earliest pioneers of LGBTQ+ sexual health and wellbeing.

As the founder of the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin, he created one of the world’s first centres offering compassionate counselling, sexual health care and early gender-affirming support.

At a time when q***r lives were criminalised and stigmatised, Hirschfeld was unwavering: LGBTQ+ people deserved dignity, safety and care — not punishment or shame.

His work laid vital foundations for the q***r-affirming wellness practices we continue to build and defend today.

📣 And just as importantly — we’re here now!

Our 🌈Proud Wellness directory connects LGBTQIA+ people with verified, inclusive and affirming wellness professionals.

Whether you’re seeking support yourself— or you’re committed to creating safer spaces as a practitioner — you don’t have to do it alone.

🌈 Continuing our series of q***r wellness trailblazers for LGBTQ+ History Month 💫

🌟 Dr Walter J. Lear (1923–2010) was a gay physician, public health advocate and lifelong champion of health justice.

His work bridged medicine, activism and social equity, pushing for healthcare systems that addressed inequality, stigma and exclusion.

Lear understood that wellbeing is inseparable from justice, and his legacy continues to inform community-centred approaches to health today.

🏳️‍⚧️ Trailblazing wellness: Alan L Hart (he/him)

Dr. Alan L. Hart (1890–1962) was an American physician and early transgender medical pioneer whose work in tuberculosis detection transformed public health practice.

Hart helped introduce X-rays to identify TB before symptoms began, protecting communities from spread and saving lives. His quiet strength and commitment to medicine — alongside his own journey as a trans man — is a profound reminder of how visibility, courage and care intertwine to improve health for everyone.

🌈Trailblazing wellness: Betty Berzon (she/her)

✨ Betty Berzon (1928–2006) was a le***an psychotherapist and one of the first mental health professionals to come out publicly as gay.
She played a key role in challenging the pathologisation of LGBTQ+ identities and was part of the movement that led to homosexuality being removed from the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).

Her work helped reshape mental health care into something more affirming, ethical and human — a legacy still felt across q***r wellbeing spaces today. 🏳️‍🌈✊🏼🏳️‍⚧️

🏳️‍⚧️Trailblazing Wellness: Lou Sullivan (he/him)

✨ Lou Sullivan (1951–1991) was a gay trans man and a pioneering advocate for trans wellbeing, healthcare access and community support.

At a time when medical systems denied care to gay trans men, Lou challenged exclusionary practices and helped reshape understandings of gender, sexuality and identity.

He founded peer support networks, educated clinicians, and advocated tirelessly for affirming, community-led care that reflected the real lives of trans people.

His legacy continues to influence trans-affirming health models and reminds us that wellbeing begins with being seen, affirmed and supported. 🌈❤️‍🔥✨

February marks LGBT+ History Month - a time to remember, reflect and reconnect with the q***r history that shaped us.

For over two decades, LGBT+ History Month has reminded us of the power of knowing our q***r ancestors. Of learning from our past. Of taking strength from LGBTQIA+ history as we navigate the challenges of today.

✨ LGBTQIA+ people have always been trailblazing wellness - even when history tried to erase us.

As healers, organisers, activists, therapists, carers and community builders, q***r people have long been at the forefront of wellbeing - often without recognition, safety or support.

This month, we’ll be honouring LGBTQ+ historical figures who helped shape the wellness and wellbeing world, and whose legacies continue to inform the affirming, inclusive care our communities deserve today.

>>> And just as importantly - we’re here now

Our Proud Wellness directory connects LGBTQIA+ people with verified, inclusive and affirming wellness practitioners who understand our lives, our identities and our realities.

Whether you’re seeking support, rest, healing or connection - or you’re a practitioner committed to creating safer spaces - you don’t have to do it alone.

Our online practitioner Directory has grown from 67 members at the start of 2025, to 99 as we kick off 2026! 🥳✨

And today, we’re introducing another fantastic Proud Wellness Directory member to you all!

👋 Name: Zoe Joanna
✨ Pronouns: she/her
🏳️‍🌈 Identity: LGBTQIA+

👉 About Zoe:

Hi, I’m Zoe. I’m an ADHD and AuDHD coach and counsellor-in-training, offering neurodiversity-affirming support for adults, particularly those diagnosed later in life.

I work with people who feel overwhelmed, burned out or stuck after years of trying to “fix” themselves or meet expectations that never quite fit. Many of my clients are navigating identity shifts, masking, shame or emotional overwhelm.

My work is trauma-informed, person-centred and grounded in compassion. I believe support should feel safe, human and collaborative, not pressured or productivity-driven.

👉 How Zoe can support you:

I offer a supportive space to slow down, explore who you are and learn how to work with your brain and nervous system.

I support ADHD and AuDHD adults with:

> Burnout, overwhelm, and emotional regulation

> Rejection sensitivity and self-criticism

> Identity, boundaries and unmasking

> Building self-understanding and self-trust

My approach blends practical support with deeper emotional work, helping you move away from shame and towards a more compassionate, sustainable way of living.

Zoe can be contacted do send her a message, she’d love to hear from you! 🙌🏳️‍🌈✨
