Good Night’s Sleep with Herbs
There are many reasons we might not be able to sleep at night. Sometimes we fall asleep but wake up many times during the night, and other times it is just difficult to get to sleep. In both cases, the result is a restless night and tiredness during the day. This might happen because of certain medical conditions such as arthritis, muscle pains and cramps, gastrointestinal imbalances, etc., or due to too many stimulants such as tea and coffee, but also ni****ne and alcohol. Insomnia can also be triggered by anxiety, depression, and worries.
Some habits also contribute to disrupting the biological clock cycles, such as staying up late to work or play, excessive screen use, and exercising too close to bedtime.
Several herbs can promote relaxation and sleep and can help regulate sleep patterns. Chamomile is often at the top of the list of herbs for relaxation, but it is also a valuable digestive herb that can help settle an upset stomach. It blends well with Lemon Balm, a muscle relaxant and adaptogen herb. Hops, Valerian, Wild Lettuce, Californian Poppy, and Passion Flowers have more of a sedative action. Skullcap, Vervain, Motherwort, and Lime Flowers can calm an overactive mind and play a role in lowering anxiety.
Always consult a qualified Medical Herbalist before choosing the right herbs, especially when taking other medication, as medicinal herbs can cause interactions.
