I'm Nyssa (see what I did there?!), and I'm an Advanced Clinical Massage Therapist (ACMT), Fertility Massage Specialist, Birth & Postpartum Doula, and Placenta Encapsulation Specialist; living in Brighton & Hove in East Sussex. I'm originally from the North East of Scotland, and found my way down south via the conduit of acadaemia, working as a medical and physics researcher. After a life-changing and almost devastating period of illness, I felt the necessity of aligning my professional life with my internal state, and followed my passion into the Doula world. Working as an academic for so many years stood me in great stead by giving me the tools to be able to investigate and fully understand the human body from an holistic perspective, in order to be able to bring myself back to full health; and it's this wisdom that I bring to each and every person and family I support under all my many hats. My motivation is always to learn more, and assimilate that information to be the best help I can be to the folk I work with. To that end, I am always undertaking courses to further my professional development, and acquire new skills. The philosophy by which I operate is through the lens of empowerment. I feel society as a whole draws so much from us, and never is this more true than when we are at our most vulnerable - whether birthing, trying to conceive, in pain, et cetera. I want everyone to feel empowered in empirical knowledge and trust of themselves to be able to advocate for the support and healing they truly want and need, whatever that looks like. My many and varied roles have drawn upon and augmented my skills in caring and stewardship, professionalism, confidentiality, commitment, kindness, understanding, empathy, enthusiasm, communication, and have instilled a strong sense of responsibility. This foundation allows me to always focus my clients at the epicentre of their own journey; building the experience that they seek together. I'm so excited to undertake this journey with you, and look forward to our time together!

Is "Gay" a Co-Morbid Condition? (Spoiler: No, but the thought process is real!)

I had a brilliant, funny moment in a consultation recently. I was asking a client about historically sitting in "odd" positions (a common indicator of flexible joints and connective tissue concerns). Their reply? "Oh, well, yeah, but I just thought that's because I'm gay!" 🤣

This gets at a huge truth: We all normalise our symptoms. Whether we attribute a physical issue to our personality, our job, our gender, or our identity group, we create mental shortcuts that prevent us from seeking a proper diagnosis.

Your hyper-flexibility, chronic exhaustion, or persistent pain is physiology, not identity. We have to stop accepting these things as simply "who we are."

If you have a physical quirk you've rationalised away, let's start a proper investigation. It's time to separate the ✨fabulous✨ from the physiological and get you the support you deserve.

It's easy to focus our energy on crafting carefully chosen words in order to manage others' perceptions of us - the beautiful mission statements, the client compliments, or the promises of change.

But the TRUE work that defines your value, your worth, and your relationships is in your actions.

For us: This means consistently showing up, honouring our commitments to clients, respecting our colleagues, and investing in the quality of the service we deliver.

For our clients: This means that the respect and value you feel is demonstrated by your actions - your follow-through, your investment, and your engagement.

Your integrity is not what you proclaim; it's what you perfect day after day. Let your actions do the talking. And when people show you who they are in return - believe them.

I know a lot of incredible small business owners in this community, and I have a great opportunity for you!

My wonderful friend Remon has launched his new photography business, Snap by Remon. Having served Brighton so beautifully as a driver for many years, he's making a career change from his taxi business, Sussex Airports Taxis, to focus on what he loves most.

As someone who works with birth every day, I know pregnancy is never “easy” or “convenient.” It is life-changing, life-risking labour. The Wired investigation into Cindy Bi reveals what happens when that reality is denied.

Pregnancy is not an “inconvenience” to outsource. It is life-and-death work. One surrogate nearly died. Another lost their womb. And yet their suffering, their humanity, is treated as a footnote to someone else’s pursuit of a child.

This is the dark side of a culture that treats babies as lifestyle symbols, and the labour of others - gestational, emotional, domestic - as disposable. Wealth can buy wombs, buy silence, buy round-the-clock nannies. But it cannot erase the violence inflicted on those whose bodies carried the risks.

As a Doula, I honour the labour, the blood, the risk, the love. What disturbs me most here is not only the entitlement of one individual, but the wider culture that enables it - a culture that tells some people they “deserve” a baby without ever having to face the embodied reality of how babies come into the world.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Surrogacy journeys can be grounded in respect, compassion, and informed care. A Doula can support everyone involved - surrogate, intended parents, and baby - with neutral, evidence-based knowledge of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This ensures that each person’s needs are heard, honoured, and met.

Surrogacy, pregnancy, birth - they demand respect. They demand humility. They demand we remember: these are human beings, not services.

Every birth matters. Every body matters. Every journey deserves respect.
