Long covid or dementia?

“After recovering from Covid one gentleman needed help with memory issues and negotiating steps,” says Ian Thompson, owner of Walfinch home care in Welwyn and Bishops Stortford. “Gradually, over six months of dedicated interaction and help with physiotherapy his short-term memory improved, as did his mobility. He’s now back to playing golf,” says Ian. If you are unsure see your GP.

24/7: Samaritans Awareness Day. The Samaritans are encouraging people to become better listeners. Why not pledge to listen without being distracted or interrupting, and to check in with loved ones more often and ask them how they really are? “As care specialists we know that careful listening can often help relieve stress before it gets critical,” says Amrit Dhaliwal CEO of home care provider Walfinch.

Walfinch carers go the extra mile “One client was having trouble keeping up with tidying and laundry, so our carer Alison now washes his clothes at her home, in her own time. She also bought a set of units for his beloved CDs and DVDs and helped him tidy them into it. He was pleased as Punch and went for a haircut – the first time for a long while.” Greg Renk, owner of Walfinch home care Mid & South Buckinghamshire, adds: “I’m proud of our team, who are working with social workers to help him get his life back.”

Stay summer safe.

Prevent dehydration by drinking 6 – 8 glasses of liquid daily (more in hot weather) and eat a balanced diet to help replace salt lost through sweat. Watch for signs of overheating: muscle cramps, mild confusion, weakness, or sleep problems. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen.

Walfinch carers help you have a safe summer.

It’s Diabetes Week.

Over 4.9 million people in the UK have diabetes and 13.6 million people are now at increased risk of type 2 diabetes – but for some people, diet, physical activity, and sustained weight loss can halve the risk of type 2. A carer from Walfinch can help you if you have diabetes or want to reduce your risk.

Sweet surprises for clients of Walfinch homecare Oxford – and for their carers.

Kam Gill, Walfinch Oxford owner and care co-ordinator Sarah Stanbrook were out and about surprising members of their care team with Jubilee cakes, just before they went into clients’ homes, so they could have Jubilee teas together. “Between us we certainly managed to spread some jubilee cheer,” says Sarah – who also used her craft skills to make sure carers were suitably decorated for the occasion.

Care that suits Brian to a tee.

Brian, 92, played golf with his wife, but dementia meant she had to give up. Now Danielle Young, senior carer at Walfinch Oxford, has started taking Brian to the local pitch and putt. Brian says: “I hadn’t played for six years but it was great to be swinging a club again.” Danielle says: “The first time was so much fun we went again. Brian hit the ball over 150 yards and was over the moon. I managed 100 yards, so I’m improving!”
