We’re hiring: Community Centre Manager 🌱
📍 Hangleton in Brighton | 💼 Full-time or Part-time | 💷 Salary: £25,000 - £30,000 per year (pro rata if part time) depending on experience
Do you care about community, people and making things run smoothly?
We’re looking for a Community Centre Manager to lead the day-to-day running of our much-loved community centre in Hangleton. This is a hands-on role at the heart of the community - making sure the building is safe, welcoming and well run, supporting staff, and helping the centre thrive.
You don’t need to know everything on day one. We’re especially keen to hear from people who are organised, community-minded and either digitally confident or keen to learn - someone who enjoys improving systems and finding better ways of doing things.
✨ What you’ll be doing:
• Managing the daily running of the centre
• Supporting and line-managing staff
• Overseeing bookings, finances, health & safety and safeguarding
• Making sure bills are paid and invoices are sent on time
• Improving systems (for example, making room and party bookings more efficient)
• Building relationships with local people, groups and partners
• Helping grow income and community impact over time
👀 We’re looking for someone who ideally:
• Has experience in a community, charity or similar setting
• Is organised, practical and people-focused
• Has good IT skills or is happy to learn
• Cares about inclusion, fairness and community voice
💛 We would especially welcome applications from people who live in, or have strong connections to, the local communities the centre exists to serve - but everyone is welcome to apply.
👉 If you feel you have some but not all the skills, please apply anyway.
👉 If you’d like an informal chat with a Trustee before applying, we’d be happy to arrange that.
📅 Closing date: by the end of 11th April 2026
📧 How to apply: please send your CV with a covering letter that sets out how you meet the Job Description and Person Specification.
Please tell us what having this job would mean to you ,and your availability to start if offered the role.
Send application to tanya@hangletoncommunitycentre.org

🌀 Supporting Regulation in Occupational Therapy

In many OT sessions, the most important work happens before we even begin a structured activity.
Supporting a child’s nervous system to feel safe, settled and regulated creates the foundation for meaningful participation — whether that’s play, learning, communication or everyday routines.

In practice, this might look like:
🌿 movement woven into the session
🌿 sensory exploration at the child’s pace
🌿 quiet spaces to pause and reset
🌿 predictable, relationship-based routines

Rather than expecting children to adapt to the environment, we adapt the environment to support the child.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing a little more about the professional learning that continues to shape how regulation is supported within therapy at Brighton Waves OT.

💛 Meet the Therapist — Mel

We’re delighted to welcome Mel to the Brighton Waves OT team as an Occupational Therapist.

Mel brings over 15 years’ experience supporting neurodivergent young people and individuals with learning differences across school and community settings. Alongside qualifying as an Occupational Therapist in 2024, she has developed a strong foundation through work in neuro and reablement services, supporting individuals in meaningful and person-centred ways.

Her approach is deeply neuro-affirming, child-centred and relationship-based, creating a safe and validating space where children can feel understood and supported to be their authentic selves.
Working as part of the Brighton Waves OT team, Mel delivers therapy within our sensory-informed clinical framework, collaborating closely with families, schools and colleagues to support meaningful participation in everyday life.

In the clinic, you might find Mel scooting along on the scooter board or cosy under the weighted blanket — two of her favourite regulating tools!

We’re so excited for this next chapter and know many families will benefit from her warmth, insight and playful approach 🌿

Please join us in giving Mel a warm welcome 👋

💛 Clinic Spotlight — Our Sensory Tuff Tray

Happy Valentine’s Day from Brighton Waves OT 🌸

Our sensory tray is always set up in the clinic and is often one of the first activities children gravitate towards. While it may look like simple play, it supports so many important foundations for everyday skills.

We use the sensory tray to support:
🌀 Regulation — helping children settle into the space and feel safe in their body
🤲 Tactile exploration — developing comfort with different textures and sensory experiences
✏️ Fine motor skills — scooping, pouring, pinching and grasping
🧰 Tool use — practising control and coordination with tweezers, spoons and cups
🌱 Confidence and choice — following the child’s interests in a calm, playful way

Seasonal themes like Valentine’s Day add a sense of fun and familiarity, while still supporting meaningful therapy goals.

What might look like play is often where some of the most important learning begins 💛

At Brighton Waves OT, therapy is usually offered in term-based packages, rather than one-off sessions.
This structure gives children the time, consistency and safety they need to build meaningful change.

✨ Our therapy packages typically include:
• 10–12 therapy sessions across a school term
• Clear goals agreed at the start, based on assessment
• Child-led, sensory-informed sessions
• Ongoing reflection and adaptation as your child progresses
• A review at the end of the block, with next steps discussed together

This approach supports children to:
✔ settle and build trust
✔ practise skills repeatedly
✔ develop regulation and independence
✔ show meaningful progress over time

Therapy isn’t about rushing — it’s about creating the right conditions for progress 💛

If you’d like to talk through whether a therapy block might be right for your child, you’re very welcome to book a call.

A question I’m asked a lot: “Where do I sit during my child’s OT session?”

At Brighton Waves OT, parents can choose what feels best:
✔ Sit on the sofa inside the clinic
✔ Sit quietly in the room and observe
✔ Wait in the community centre seating area outside
✔ Join in for part of the session if helpful
✔ Step out briefly if the child works better with space

Every child responds differently — and we follow what helps them feel safe, regulated and confident.

You're always welcome here, in whatever way works best for your child 💛

Play isn’t “just fun” — play is one of the most important occupations for children.

Through play, children learn:
• emotional regulation
• social skills
• motor planning
• problem-solving
• hand strength + coordination
• confidence

If a child avoids play, becomes overwhelmed, or struggles to join in, it can tell us a lot about their sensory or motor needs.

Occupational Therapy supports the foundations behind play so children can explore and engage in ways that feel safe and meaningful.

✨ Play is development.

Clinic Spotlight: Our Sensory Gym Space

Welcome to our sensory gym!

This is where movement, regulation and confidence come together.

Movement supports:
🌀 sensory organisation
⚖️ balance and core control
🧠 attention and learning
💛 emotional regulation
🌈 confidence and play

The sensory gym is designed to be safe, playful and child-led.

Children are encouraged to explore what feels regulating for their body through swinging, climbing, balancing and meaningful movement.

Every child uses this space differently — and that’s exactly the point.

✨ Movement is connection.
✨ Movement is regulation.
✨ Movement is communication.

If you’d like to see how this space is used in therapy sessions, book online through our website for a free consultation
