It’s easy to wonder if it’s ‘just a phase’ especially when everything feels so intense right now.
But what’s really happening beneath the surface is something much deeper.
Your baby’s nervous system is still learning how to cope with the world around them.
Babies are born with an immature nervous system which means they can’t self regulate yet.
So when they’re overwhelmed
by stimulation, tiredness, wind or discomfort, their body shifts into a stress response.
That’s when you see the crying, the tension, the difficulty settling and sleeping.
They’re responding in the only way their body knows how and in those moments they don’t need fixing.
They need you. Your calm, your voice, your gentle and reassuring touch.
Because right now your baby can’t regulate on their own.
When you offer slow, loving, predictable touch, you’re helping their body soften, their breathing settle and their whole system feel just a little bit safer.
This isn’t just about getting through a moment. You’re supporting their regulation, reducing stress hormones, easing tension
and gently encouraging that rest and digest state.
Over time you’re quietly teaching their body what calm feels like and what safety feels like. And that learning stays with them!
So if you’re holding a colicky baby, a gassy newborn or a little one who just won’t settle, supporting their nervous system can make a real difference.
And you don’t have to figure that out alone.
If you’ve ever wished you knew exactly how to support your baby in these moments in a way that feels natural and reassuring, I gently guide you through it step by step in my baby massage classes ❤️
