Have you ever been to an event that just feels different?

One week on from the yourcoachingjourney annual conference in Warwickshire.

A wonderful event as always organised by helenleathers and Tom Dillon – bringing together doctors who coach.

The speakers were all brilliant. I'm left full of ideas I can incorporate into my own coaching to help my clients and patients.

The best part of these conferences for me though is the atmosphere and the people.
There is a great energy of warmth, open-ness and optimism.

It was lovely to connect with old friends and new.
I love hearing from people at different stages of their coaching journeys. How they are helping patients within the NHS and clients in their own private practice. I particularly enjoy hearing the entrepreneurial journeys that doctors are on when starting their own coaching enterprise.

If you are a doctor or health professional thinking about coaching, then I would highly recommend getting in touch with Tom and Helen at Your Coaching Journey.

I was enjoying the event so much I forgot to take any photos.

Thanks to the wonderful drjowatkins for this one.

Becoming a Health Coach

In conversation with about what health professionals need to know when transitioning into health coaching.

The problem? There’s no regulation around health coaching, which means massive variability in quality. Some coaches are highly trained professionals. Others have almost no training at all. That lack of clarity leaves many health professionals confused about what they actually need to put in place.

We are seeing growing interest in coaching amongst doctors and health professionals—whether it’s bringing coaching skills into your current role, offering it as an additional service, or making a total career change. Without clarity on qualifications, accreditation, supervision, indemnity and how to actually find and retain clients, it’s easy to feel lost.

are hosting a free Coaching with Confidence webinar to walk through the practicalities. If you’re considering coaching, currently training, or newly qualified, this one’s for you.

January Recap

2025 was one of the busiest years for me.
January felt like stepping into a different rhythm entirely.

I spent Christmas and New Year with family in rural Queensland enjoying quality time – plenty of sunshine, fun and connection. It was the perfect reset and recharge. Then on to spending an incredible time in Brisbane – one of my favourite cities in the world.

Flying home to Scotland brought a huge contrast: snow-covered landscapes and the most spectacular northern lights I’ve ever witnessed.

I’ve had a chance to reflect and I’m so grateful for the efforts , Lindsay and I have put into growing over the past 12 months.

I’m grateful for all the support we’ve received along the way. It’s been wonderful reconnecting with our members at our live sessions this month. I love spending time with inspiring people who are committed to their own growth, who challenge the status quo and who genuinely care about making a difference in healthcare and in their own lives.

This month I’ve had some great conversations with medics and coaches who are growing their businesses and doing things differently. There are lots of exciting projects ahead, including the launch of our LifeMed Coaching Plus. I’m looking forward to the year ahead and to sharing the journey with you.

January has taught me something important: sustainability matters. Looking after ourselves is the foundation of everything else. You can’t pour from an empty cup – and that’s how we build real, lasting impact.

What’s one thing you’re genuinely excited about this year?

I’m not gonna lie… I was nervous.

Standing on stage, heart racing, a room full of people will do that.

But the real feeling of optimism and hope I experienced at BSLM 2025 helped dissolve that.

Delivering our session "From Theory to Thriving: Putting Lifestyle Medicine into Practice” was a real highlight.

Afterwards the conversations kept circling the same points.

→ Many clinicians want to make Lifestyle Medicine part of daily practice

→ Coaching is coming up again and again as the missing piece.

→ Lifestyle Medicine is just as powerful in the NHS, communities and private clinics.

The feedback was specific and generous.

Practical steps mattered.

So did managing psychological barriers such as imposter syndrome.

One person said: 'I've been holding myself back from the career I actually want.’

That line stuck with me.

There are so many healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to share.

Patients who need what you can offer.

The world needs Lifestyle Medicine right now.

The gap is often just fear disguised as "not ready yet."

Thank you to everyone who came, asked questions, and shared what you’re working on.

You helped reveal where the real work begins.

What’s still resonating with you since the event?

If you want to continue the conversation, join our free workshop this Friday 3rd October, 09.30-10.30: The 7 Steps to Thriving with Lifestyle Medicine.

Six months ago, I would never have thought this was possible.

Running is something I have always found challenging and has never particularly appealed to me - despite sport being a huge part of my life.

But something kept nagging away at me to give it a try.

So 6 months ago I started - imperfectly.
It was brutal.
I felt completely out of my depth.

There were many times when quitting felt like the sensible option, but something deeper kept me going - the promise I'd made to myself to see this through.

Over time I have really discovered the joy of running.
I am so grateful for the decision to start and the countless decisions to keep going when it was easier to stop.

This morning at the River Ness 10K, something shifted when they called "runners to the start line."
For the first time, I thought of myself as a runner.

I posted a sub- 1 hour time for my first 10k which for me is a huge achievement.
Looking back I see that gap between "That's not me" and "I just did that."

It's incredible what can happen when we step outside our comfort zone long enough to discover what we're capable of.
Something I frequently see when coaching other healthcare professionals.

We don't need perfect conditions or natural talent.
We need the courage to be uncomfortable long enough for growth to happen.

The question isn't whether you're ready.

It's whether you're willing to begin.

What would you do if you stopped waiting to feel ready?

Lifestyle Medicine is no longer a fringe movement.

It’s becoming the future many doctors are quietly choosing.

I left the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine 2025 conference feeling something I hadn’t felt in a while: momentum.

Real, hopeful, collective momentum.

In the whirlwind of talks, catch-ups and chats at the LifeMed stall, something clicked.

Healthcare professionals aren’t just learning about Lifestyle Medicine anymore.

They’re ready to live it, build with it and most importantly lead with it.

That shift from theory to thriving was the theme of our session and the thread running through so many conversations we had in Brighton.

I met GPs on the edge of career change.

Consultants exploring coaching.

Junior doctors already asking better questions than I ever did.

There was optimism in the air, but not the vague kind.

The grounded, roll-up-your-sleeves kind.

The kind that says: “Something is changing and I want to be part of it.”

To those who joined our talk, stopped by our stall or simply shared a story over a coffee - thank you.

You reminded me why LifeMed Community exists.

You reminded me that the future of medicine is already in the room.

We just have to keep building it.

What was your standout moment from Brighton?

Is this your most accessible tool for emotional regulation?

Fascinating conversation with functional breathing expert Dr Felipe Torres _eupnoea_ at our LifeMed Community live session last week.

What caught my attention most was the bidirectional relationship between breathing and our emotions.

I am aware that my emotional state affects my breathing pattern.
When I am anxious my breathing is shallower and faster.
When I'm relaxed, my breathing is slower and deeper.
What I didn't fully appreciate is how this also works the other way around.

We have this incredible tool accessible to us at all times.
I've been experimenting this past week with some of the techniques Dr Felipe recommended. Particularly extending the exhale to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
Even just a couple of minutes here and there during the day I have noticed a difference.
More at peace.
More clear-headed.

What I love most - It requires no equipment, no apps, no special location.
Just me and my breath.

It was also wonderful to hear success stories of how Dr Felipe has used functional breathing techniques to help patients in clinical situations, including the emergency department.
I'm looking forward to exploring more of these techniques and their clinical applications.

Have you used your breath to support your wellbeing? I'd be interested to hear about your experiences.

That is how it’s done!

Transforming the health of under-served communities with Lifestyle Medicine in the NHS.

Last night we were privileged to hear from Dr Camille Hirons at our live session, who shared her incredible work with the Lifestyle Medicine Accelerator.

She shared with our members how she has introduced Lifestyle Medicine services in her NHS practice and is now rolling this out – and helping other NHS practices do the same.

Her passion for bringing evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine to the NHS is contagious – and we have data that this approach works!

The results speak for themselves:
✅ Remarkable patient transformations, particularly among diabetic patients in underserved populations. Significant improvements in HbA1c and other clinical markers
✅ Proven interventions that are making real differences to people’s lives. Patients reporting feeling more empowered and in control of their own health
✅ Sustainable, accessible healthcare solutions that work within the NHS framework.

What struck me most was Camille’s collaborative approach - offering bespoke training packages designed specifically for NHS teams and co-designed solutions tailored to meet unique community needs.

This is exactly what we need to embed Lifestyle Medicine into everyday care.

For any GP practices looking to integrate Lifestyle Medicine into the NHS, I highly recommend connecting with Dr Camille Hirons

This is exactly what our healthcare system needs.
