Today, February 4th, the world comes together to observe World Cancer Day under the powerful theme "United by Unique" a reminder that while cancer is a global threat, every person's journey with cancer is deeply personal and distinct.

🌍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In 2025, an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases were diagnosed globally, with 10 million deaths. By 2050, these numbers are projected to rise dramatically with cancer diagnoses expected to exceed 30 million annually.

The reality is stark: approximately seven out of every 10 cancer patients worldwide are diagnosed in advanced stages, when treatment options are limited and survival rates drop significantly.

🇵🇰 𝗣𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻'𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲

Pakistan faces an alarming cancer burden that demands immediate attention. According to GLOBOCAN data, Pakistan reports 178,388 new cancer cases annually, with 117,149 cancer deaths. Currently, approximately 4.1 million prevalent cancer cases exist in Pakistan 1.7 million males and 2.4 million females.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝟱 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻:

> Breast Cancer - 24.1% (epidemic proportions, affecting 1 in 9 women)
> Oral Cavity Cancer - 9.6% (linked to to***co and betel nut use)
> Colorectal Cancer - 4.9%
> Esophageal Cancer - 4.2%
> Liver Cancer - 3.9%

𝗔𝗴𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:

Middle-aged people comprise 43% of cancer cases, followed by seniors at 30% and adults at 20%. Alarmingly, children and adolescents are not spared with leukemia, CNS tumors, and Hodgkin lymphoma being most common in younger populations.

⚠️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵

What many don't realize is that over 40% of cancer deaths are linked to modifiable risk factors including to***co use, harmful alcohol consumption, obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diets, and air pollution. Many of Pakistan's most common cancers—oral, liver, lung, and cervical—show strong correlations with preventable causes like to***co use, hepatitis B and C, and HPV infections.

✅ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

When cancer is detected early, survival rates improve dramatically. Yet access to screening, timely diagnosis, and affordable treatment remains unequal particularly in low and middle-income countries like Pakistan.

Often called the "𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿," ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women globally PubMed, yet it remains one of the deadliest. This February, as we observe National Cancer Prevention Month, let's shine a light on the facts that could save lives.

📊 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆

In 2025, an estimated 20,890 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in the United States alone, with 12,730 deaths expected. American Society of Clinical Oncology Globally, the picture is even more concerning.

By 2050, the number of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer worldwide will rise over 55% to 503,448, with deaths increasing to 350,956 annually. This means ovarian cancer will claim almost 8 million lives between 2022 and 2050 without better prevention or control measures.

🇵🇰 𝗣𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻'𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

In Pakistan, ovarian cancer accounts for 3.8% of all cancers and 6.8% of cancers in women, ranking as the second most common cancer among females after breast cancer. Pakistan is among five countries including India, China, Indonesia, and Japan with the highest ovarian cancer mortality rates globally. Ovarian cancer is most frequently diagnosed among women aged 55-64. However, Pakistan presents a uniquely concerning pattern. in Pakistan, the mean age at presentation is 45 years, significantly younger than in Western countries.

⚠️ 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀?

Approximately 20% of ovarian cancer cases occur in women under 40, yet early detection remains challenging. The disease is often asymptomatic in early stages, with symptoms like bloating, pelvic discomfort, and fatigue easily dismissed leading to diagnosis at advanced stages when treatment is most difficult.

National Cancer Prevention Month was established to shift the global conversation from treatment to prevention. While the exact origins trace back to various cancer awareness initiatives in the 1980s, it gained momentum when research revealed that 30-50% of all cancers are preventable through lifestyle modifications, early screening, and public health interventions.

Pakistan's largest oncology congress begins tomorrow at Marriott Karachi, bringing together 2,500+ cancer care professionals for the 27th Annual Cancer Congress by PSCO (Pakistan Society of Clinical Oncology).
