If you’ve been in the last week or two you may have noticed the waiting room has had a bit of a refresh!

We had to close for a couple of days in April to get a brand spanking new boiler fitted, and took the opportunity to get to DIY-ing ✨

With the green and the fish paintings, I am now nicknaming this the pond room! We hope this can offer a place of calm for you before your sessions.

Don’t know where to start with therapy? That’s okay.

Whether it’s not knowing how to take that first step and arrange a first session, or what to bring once you’re there, starting can feel really difficult.

There’s no right or wrong place to start in therapy, or to end up for that matter! It’s unique to you, and your therapist is there to help you find your way with it.

Sometimes it’s more about just starting and seeing what happens. There’s nothing scarier than a blank page and all that!

“If a literal red flag once indicated that a particular military position would be defended to the death, what does it say about our willingness to die on a particular hill?”

Back in September last year we launched a series in the Therapeutic Thread called ‘the magic words of mental health’, where we dissect popular phrases from so called therapy speak and the pop psychology world.

The first of these instalments looked at red flags, and what we really mean when we say someone or something is red flag.

Any words or phrases you want us to do next? drop a comment!

Things are winding down here at Brighton and Hastings Therapy Centres as we get ready for some time off over Christmas.

Many of our therapists continue seeing clients over Christmas and New Year, but many, including our admin team, are taking a well earned break!

We will have minimal cover in the office from 22nd December to 5th January. If you need anything from us, just leave us an email and we will get to it as soon as we can in the new year.

We know this year can be a tough time for many, so we’d like to point you to the crisis support services on our websites for information about what might be available during that time.

Take care all!

Something about September has that New Year feeling, with a lot of people starting new things or returning to the old after a bit of a break.

Therapy can be one of those new things you start at this transitional time. It can also be one of those things you return to after a bit of a break.

Leaving therapy and coming back can feel to some like a failure, but it isn’t. It is a reflection of the completely normal fluctuation in how much support we need at different times in our lives, and of the non-linear nature of healing.

Returning to something can be just as scary as starting something new, and just as brave!

Missed the July issue of the Therapeutic Thread?

This month we were talking about anti-depressants or, more specifically, coming off them.

Many people think that if they are going to come off their medication, Summer is as good a time as any. The longer days, better weather and, for some, quieter months can make it feel easier. But regardless of when (or if) you do it, it’s not necessarily an easy process.

You can read a thoughtful and personal piece from Ryan about his journey tapering off anti-depressants here https://mailchi.mp/brightontherapycentre/therapeutic-thread-july-2025

Why summer is actually the best time to start therapy (according to some)!

Starting therapy at this time of year may seem counter-intuitive, when lots of people are feeling their best, enjoying the sunshine and going out more, but there’s an argument to be made for why it may actually make a lot of sense…

1. Loss of routine - Work and studies might be slowing down or pausing completely at this time of year. With more free time we also lose our sense of routine, which can be incredibly destabilising! Therapy is a weekly commitment, that can give structure and focus at a time of year where you may have more time to work on the things you want to bring.

2. Motivation - With longer days and warmer weather, many of us can feel a boost of motivation to take care of ourselves and do things we enjoy. Why not channel that motivation into something you might have put off for a while, such as starting therapy?

3. Less likely to be in crisis - Therapy isn’t just for when you’re at rock bottom. In fact, you may be able to make more use of it when you are feeling better, and develop those coping mechanisms now so that you don’t reach that crisis point.

4. Summer-pattern SAD - For all the talk of the weather improving our mood, some people experience summer-pattern Seasonal Affective Disorder. Symptoms include insomnia, reduced appetite, agitation and irritability, potentially caused by the longer daylight hours, higher temperatures and reduced melatonin. If you experience this, starting therapy in the summer is a great idea.
