Something about September has that New Year feeling, with a lot of people starting new things or returning to the old after a bit of a break.

Therapy can be one of those new things you start at this transitional time. It can also be one of those things you return to after a bit of a break.

Leaving therapy and coming back can feel to some like a failure, but it isn’t. It is a reflection of the completely normal fluctuation in how much support we need at different times in our lives, and of the non-linear nature of healing.

Returning to something can be just as scary as starting something new, and just as brave!

Missed the July issue of the Therapeutic Thread?

This month we were talking about anti-depressants or, more specifically, coming off them.

Many people think that if they are going to come off their medication, Summer is as good a time as any. The longer days, better weather and, for some, quieter months can make it feel easier. But regardless of when (or if) you do it, it’s not necessarily an easy process.

You can read a thoughtful and personal piece from Ryan about his journey tapering off anti-depressants here https://mailchi.mp/brightontherapycentre/therapeutic-thread-july-2025

Why summer is actually the best time to start therapy (according to some)!

Starting therapy at this time of year may seem counter-intuitive, when lots of people are feeling their best, enjoying the sunshine and going out more, but there’s an argument to be made for why it may actually make a lot of sense…

1. Loss of routine - Work and studies might be slowing down or pausing completely at this time of year. With more free time we also lose our sense of routine, which can be incredibly destabilising! Therapy is a weekly commitment, that can give structure and focus at a time of year where you may have more time to work on the things you want to bring.

2. Motivation - With longer days and warmer weather, many of us can feel a boost of motivation to take care of ourselves and do things we enjoy. Why not channel that motivation into something you might have put off for a while, such as starting therapy?

3. Less likely to be in crisis - Therapy isn’t just for when you’re at rock bottom. In fact, you may be able to make more use of it when you are feeling better, and develop those coping mechanisms now so that you don’t reach that crisis point.

4. Summer-pattern SAD - For all the talk of the weather improving our mood, some people experience summer-pattern Seasonal Affective Disorder. Symptoms include insomnia, reduced appetite, agitation and irritability, potentially caused by the longer daylight hours, higher temperatures and reduced melatonin. If you experience this, starting therapy in the summer is a great idea.

Happy Pride month!

Our June issue of the Therapeutic Thread is out, featuring a piece by one of our therapists - Mary George.

As a q***r neurodivergent therapist, she asks the question “what does it mean to have pride in who you are in a world that doesn’t affirm you?”, thinking particularly about the current political climate. And what on earth does that have to do with therapy?

JUST LAUNCHED 🎉

We have a new group starting on Thursdays at 7:15pm! But why group therapy?

Group therapy isn’t necessarily where we go when we want to start therapy. We might think of therapy as one-to-one, and the thought of baring all to a group of strangers as far too scary. But there are some real, practical advantages to choosing group!

1 - Work friendly hours. All of our groups start 5pm or later, so you can easily find therapy to fit around a 9-5.

2 - Affordable. Group therapy can be a much more affordable option than individual therapy.

3 - A sense of belonging. Your group may look like strangers at first, but the trust and shared understanding that can emerge in group therapy can foster a real sense of belonging that you might struggle to find elsewhere.

4 - Improve your relationships. Group therapy is a chance to explore how you interact and communicate with people and your own dynamic in social settings. This can give new perspective on your relationships outside of the group.

There are loads of reasons to join a group. There’s more information on our website about what group therapy is and what it can do for you.

If you want to join, you can book your initial consultation now or get in touch via the contact on our website!

If you’ve missed it, this week has been Mental Health Awareness Week! The theme this year is community and how important it is to our mental health.

Working as we do with mental health, it’s often on a one to one basis, so it’s an incredibly useful reminder that these wider connections play a huge role in our wellbeing.

We have a community of therapists at Brighton Therapy Centre, here to support each other and you!

Open discussions about mental health can work wonders. If you haven’t felt ready before to start that conversation, why not start now?

"I think we all have a tendency to use a diagnosis to close a door, rather than open it."

We've all seen the debates about whether or not we are over-diagnosing mental health problems in the UK. The latest headlines see charities criticising Nigel Farage's claims of "mental illness problems" being over diagnosed by family GPs. (BTW, who here has a family GP anymore? anyone?) - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/apr/24/nigel-farage-says-mental-health-cases-hugely-overdiagnosed

Perhaps a more thoughtful take on the issue of diagnosis can be found here, in Moya Sarner's article "The promise of diagnosis: how it can open a door to true self-understanding" - https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2025/apr/21/the-promise-of-diagnosis-how-it-can-open-a-door-to-true-self-understanding
