Why summer is actually the best time to start therapy (according to some)!
Starting therapy at this time of year may seem counter-intuitive, when lots of people are feeling their best, enjoying the sunshine and going out more, but there’s an argument to be made for why it may actually make a lot of sense…
1. Loss of routine - Work and studies might be slowing down or pausing completely at this time of year. With more free time we also lose our sense of routine, which can be incredibly destabilising! Therapy is a weekly commitment, that can give structure and focus at a time of year where you may have more time to work on the things you want to bring.
2. Motivation - With longer days and warmer weather, many of us can feel a boost of motivation to take care of ourselves and do things we enjoy. Why not channel that motivation into something you might have put off for a while, such as starting therapy?
3. Less likely to be in crisis - Therapy isn’t just for when you’re at rock bottom. In fact, you may be able to make more use of it when you are feeling better, and develop those coping mechanisms now so that you don’t reach that crisis point.
4. Summer-pattern SAD - For all the talk of the weather improving our mood, some people experience summer-pattern Seasonal Affective Disorder. Symptoms include insomnia, reduced appetite, agitation and irritability, potentially caused by the longer daylight hours, higher temperatures and reduced melatonin. If you experience this, starting therapy in the summer is a great idea.
