Scar tissue is a connective tissue that replaces pre-injury tissue after it is damaged.

At scar sites that experienced complication-free wound healing, & healthy scar development, functionality levels regained is said to be 70% of pre-injury levels (meaning post-injury, tissues never function the same again).

However, when there is delayed or interrupted healing & pathological scar formation, functionality regains can be as low as 30% compared to pre-injury levels.

If you experienced delayed or problematic healing, or if have a pathological scar, Scar Work Therapy may be able to help with sensation/mobility/integration.

3 year old c section scar.

Before scar therapy - red, raised, localised altered sensation reported & 'tugging' sensation noted on overhead movements.

Following x3 scar therapy sessions - scar flattened, paler in colour, less restricted at local area & increased range of movement before 'tugging' sensation reported.

Although the focus of Scar Work is not aesthetic, and the aim of treatment is to improve mobility/help with altered sensation / improve functionality / ease adhesions / assist healing, very often there is a visual change too, which can help people understand the impact sessions have had on the local area.

The photo below of a 3-year old hip replacement scar, is a good example of how you can visually see the adaptations that have occurred post Scar Work treatment.

You can see where the scar and associated tethering have lifted from underlying structures, resulting in a smoother texture and less "pulling" on local tissue. Colour changes can be seen & the scar appears more integrated with the local area.

The Patient reported better sensation to a previously "numb" area, and overall the scar in relation to the surrounding area, had better mobility.

Post x2 45 min treatments
ScarWork can help with older scars too !

I Have had the pleasure of treating some really interesting scars this week, one of which required a quick brain storm & chat with fellow ScarWork therapist,Sam.

Sam specialises in treating the post natal population & C-section scars in particular, so it was good to pick her well experienced brains !

Now, I'm NOT new to working with C-section scars, and have seen how great ScarWork can be for this population of patients, but I AM a big believer that 'theres always more to learn', and reaching out to the wonderful therapists I've met over the years at courses / workshops / events / etc, is a great way for me ensure I'm 'covering all bases' , and offering the best service to my patients.

Love this simple & clear explanation on how scars may cause global restrictions in the body , away from the scar site itself , shared by Burrell Education

Encourage better movement of the tissues around the scar & the local area, for improved mobility elsewhere in the body.

This is why I love ScarWork, it's not always just about the scar itself.......
