This month we’ll be doing our best impression of a coffee table with utthita kurmasana. Raised Tortoise Pose. The Sanskrit word “utthita” means raised, “kurma” means tortoise or turtle, and “asana” means pose. This posture is frequently practiced as part of advanced yoga sequences.

Ancient sages frequently named asanas after shapes or qualities that they observed in nature. Tortoise Pose is named after an animal that withdraws into its shell when startled or threatened. When you take the physical shape of the tortoise in this pose, you will often experience an exquisite feeling of moving inward mentally, as though the world around you is moving out of focus as your inner world becomes more audible and clear.

🐢The benefits of raised tortoise pose include:

🌱strengthens the back
🌱tones the arms and abdominal organs
🌱increases flexibility in the hips and hamstrings
🌱quiets the mind
🌱builds core and arm strength
🌱helps improve circulation and reduce stress

Meridians are subtle energy pathways through which qi (life-force energy) flows in the body. Although the term meridian comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine, yoga describes a similar system called nadis and prana.

Yogic philosophy teaches that the body has an energetic layer beyond the physical. This energetic layer acts as a bridge between the physical body and consciousness, influencing how we feel, think, and experience life.

When the meridians or nadis are open and balanced, our energy flows smoothly, creating vitality and inner harmony. Through yoga postures, breathwork, and meditation, these meridians are stimulated, restoring the natural flow of energy throughout the body.

Dear Yogi’s

Namaste one and all, blessings of love, light and gratitude to you all.

This months quote highlights the importance of being able to still the mind, and by doing so, the huge impact that it has on every aspect of our lives. The ability to develop inner stability, calmness, and equanimity like an unmovable rock is key to navigate a chaotic world, preventing suffering, and achieving true peace and wisdom, because if we manage to do that through dedicated practice we won’t be swept away by external troubles, enabling us to see things clearly and react wisely.

Cultivating a steady, balanced mind does not mean we become numb to everything, but rather being open and strong enough to handle life’s ups and downs without losing our centre, making our own mind our best ally.

When our mind is steady, it stops creating inner turmoil (our “enemy”) and instead supports us, helps us, allowing for clarity. By not being controlled by reactions (fear, attachment), we rise above the cycle of pain and distress that arises from clinging to what we like and pushing away what we don’t.

Achieving this state is by no means easy, we must learn to observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment, see our obstacles as opportunities to build strength, not as things to avoid. We must learn to be open to all experiences, good or bad, without being swept away by them. Focus on processing life as it is, not as you think it should be.

Blessings, stay humble, always be kind, keep breathing deeply, own your own peace and joy, if you never try you’ll never know, namaste.

This month we’ll be doing our best impression of a pretzel. We’ll be practicing bala parsva bhuja dandasana. Baby Grasshopper Pose. The Sanskrit word “bala” means child, “parsva” means side, “bhuja” means arm and “asana” means pose. This posture is a variation of the more advanced Grasshopper Pose.

The Grasshopper Symbolises luck, stability, courage, fertility, balance, and freedom in a practitioner’s life. Practicing baby grasshopper pose is said to incorporate freedom in the practitioner through balancing and stability.

🥨Benefits of baby grasshopper pose include:

🍀strengthens the shoulders, wrists, arms, ankles, hips, knee joints, and core
🍀stretches and lengthens the outer hips, hamstrings, lower back, and spine
🍀reduces tension and stress in the lower back
🍀reduces stress and anxiety
🍀stretches the core
🍀stimulates Swadishtana Chakra and Manipura Chakra

Dear Yogi’s Namaste one and all, blessings of love, light and gratitude to you all.

This months quote is one of my favourites. Beautifully capturing the magical and transformative power of kindness.

The meaning of this festive statement is that acts of kindness much like a fresh blanket of snow, can transform any situation or person it comes into contact with.

Snow covers up harshness, imperfections, and the mundane with a clean, and soft beautiful layer. Similarly, kindness has the power to soften difficult circumstances, heal hurt and trauma, and bring grace and beauty to everyday life and human interactions.

It suggests that a kind perspective or action makes the world a better and more pleasing place to live. Acts of kindness can be life changing, being kind heals even the deepest wounds, not just for the receiver but also the giver.

So let everything you do come from a place of kindness, if you yourself could do with some kindness but have never felt it’s embrace, then don’t wait for it to come to you, begin by being kind to others, let others feel the blanket of kindness. You yourself may never feel it, but trust me, your life will have changed immeasurably for giving it out. Choose kindness, it will always be the right thing to do.

Blessings, stay humble, always be kind, keep breathing deeply, own your own peace and joy, if you never try you’ll never know, namaste.

This month we’ll be firing you up with Vrischikasana. Scorpion pose. The Sanskrit word “vrischik” means scorpion and “asana” means pose. This posture resembles the scorpion with its tail arched over its back, ready to strike.

The head, which is the seat of knowledge, is also the seat of pride, anger, hatred, jealousy, intolerance, and malice. These emotions are more deadly than the poison which the scorpion carries in its sting. The yogi, by stamping on his own head with his feet, attempts to eradicate these self-destroying emotions and passions. Thus seeking to develop humility, calmness, tolerance, and to becoming free from ego. Subjugation of the ego leads to harmony and happiness.

🦂Benefits of scorpion pose include:
🪡strengthens the muscles
🪡tones the abdomen
🪡enhances breathing capacity
🪡improves balance
🪡promotes awareness, concentration, and focus
🪡calms the mind

How to:

• Start in Forearm Stand. Press firmly into your forearms and keep elbows shoulder distance apart.
• Bend your knees. Let your feet drop toward your head.
• Shift your chest forward. Move hips slightly over shoulders to create the backbend.
• Lower the feet toward your head. Keep core engaged and shoulders strong.
• Come out by straightening legs back into forearm stand, then lowering down safely.

Tip: Use a wall for support and warm up your shoulders + back first.

This month we are featuring Ardha Chandra Chapasana. Sugarcane pose. The Sanskrit word “ardha" means half, “chandra” means moon, “chapa” means bow “asana” means pose.

This is a variation of Half Moon Pose with a little extra quad stretch, and symbolises a bow and arrow, or the flexibility of a sugarcane stalk. The mythology behind this posture is linked to the deities Lalita and Ganesh. Lalita wields a sugarcane bow and arrow-tipped flowers. The sugarcane bow symbolises the duality of our own nature, the ability to be pleasant and sweet, but also fierce and strong when needed.

One story recounts Ganesh falling after getting a fright and his sweets scattering, leading to him grabbing them while trying to maintain balance. This symbolises overcoming obstacles and finding balance amidst challenges. keep both these stories in mind when trying this posture.

The benefits of sugarcane pose include:
🌸tones your ankles, legs, hips, buttocks, and abdomen.
🌸stretches groin, calves and quads.
🌸promotes balance, full body coordination and awareness.
