What if the path through suffering began with sitting still, and listening deeply?

Dharma, Dialogue & Meditation is a small, intimate practice group where early Buddhist teaching, meditation, and psychotherapeutic insight meet - not as rigid doctrine or belief, but as living, breathing tools for understanding ourselves and each other.

Over six weeks, this experience will weave together guided meditation, Dharma reflections drawn from the Pali Canon, and honest facilitated dialogue, creating a space in which contemplation becomes lived experience, and genuine community can form.

Each weekly session will explore a different theme:

Why We Suffer
The Dividing Mind
Desire and Drive
Difficulty without Hardening
Kindness without Collapse
Letting Go and Living Forward

The group is led by Rory Singer, an experienced psychotherapist trained in Gestalt and Psychoanalytic traditions, who spent five years living as an ordained Buddhist monk in the Thai Forest Tradition.

📅 Tuesdays, 5:30–7pm | 14th April – 19th May
📍 New Road Psychotherapy, Hove
💛 Cost for the full series: £90

Group size limited to 8 participants - book your place via the link below:

5 Wellbeing Tips for Spring from New Road Psychotherapy...

🌸 MAKE SPACE
The days are lengthening and buds are opening into blossom, symbolising expansion and hopeful possibility. To support our own growth, it can be helpful to create space for change or new perspectives to emerge. This might look like spring cleaning, emotional release, digital decluttering, or ticking off lingering jobs. What could making space mean for you this season?

🌿 MOVE YOUR BODY
Spring is a season of rising energy, when the natural world becomes more active after the stillness of winter. We all have different bodies and physical capacities, but if possible it can be uplifting at this time of year to bring a little more movement into your day. Whether you take a morning walk, stretch before bed, or dance in the kitchen while cooking - it all counts! What kind of movement would feel good to you?

☀️ SOAK UP THE LIGHT
It can be hard to notice at first, but from March onwards the light (and warmth!) slowly begins to return. Exposure to sunlight, especially first thing in the morning, is not only a mood booster, but also helps regulate the circadian rhythm and improve sleep. Even just 10-15 minutes spent in natural daylight, when you wake up or on your lunch break, can bring benefits. How could you get more light during the day?

💫 EMBRACE CREATIVITY
As the season of new life, spring reminds us of the power of creativity to lift our spirits and reconnect us with ourselves. ‘Being creative’ can sound intimidating (especially if you’ve ever been made to feel you’re ‘not good’ at art!) but it’s something everyone can enjoy. As well as the typical artistic activities, creativity includes things like cooking, music, writing, or coming up with ideas. How do you like to be creative?

💚 SHARE & CONNECT
This is the time of year when birds and animals start to become more active again, and we might also feel more ready for socialising or connection. If your winter was quiet or lonely, or if you’re going through a hard time, it can feel really difficult to reach out to others - but we humans are made to live in community and relationship, and even one good conversation or moment of understanding can help. What kind of connection do you need today?

If you're looking for support as you explore your own season of growth, we’re here to help. Discover our services or book an initial consultation on our website:

EVENT UPDATE: There's been a change of speaker for May's CPD Sussex workshop, which was originally titled 'Working with Boarding School Syndrome' and was due to be led by Amelia White. We're very pleased that Rory Singer will now be leading the session, bringing his perspective on the topic through a slightly different lens.

If you have already booked your place, please see the email sent out a few days ago for all the practicalities of the change, or email maddy@newroadpsychotherapy.com if you have any questions.

If you'd like to join us, there are still a few places left! The workshop will support qualified and trainee therapists to...

🔵 Explore the clinical impact of prolonged childhood separation, considering how early emotional self-reliance shapes adult intimacy, identity, and relational defence.

⚪️ Reflect with objectivity and compassion on how early separation and institutional expectations can shape the developing self, and how therapy can support the restoration of vulnerability, dignity and relational safety.

🟠 Look closely and carefully at how the culture of institutions such as boarding school continues to live within clients long after they leave.

Dharma, Dialogue & Meditation is a small, closed reflective practice group for those curious about exploring the integration of Buddhist teachings - particularly those from the Pali Canon - with psychotherapeutic insight and ethical enquiry. Rather than focusing on belief or doctrine, its purpose is to understand how suffering arises, and how it can be softened through awareness and relationship.

🌀 The journey:
Run in six-week blocks, the group offers an intimate and supportive container in which to regularly connect with self, others and the world through the lenses of Buddhism and psychotherapy in a grounded and accessible way. Each week will be inspired by a different theme, weaving together meditation, reflection and discussion to create a rich and meaningful environment for learning and growth.

🌿 Each session includes:
A guided meditation; a short Dharma reflection drawn from the early teachings; facilitated dialogue to help turn contemplation into lived experience; and the opportunity to come together in community with likeminded others.

🧘 Your guide:
The group is led by Rory Singer, an experienced psychotherapist whose perspective is rooted in Gestalt and Psychoanalytic traditions, alongside Buddhist teachings. In his twenties, Rory was ordained as a Buddhist monk in the Thai Forest Tradition under Ajahn Chah and Ajahn Sumedho, and lived in monasteries in England and Thailand for five years - a period that has shaped his work as a therapist and teacher ever since.

🗓️ The practical details:
Six consecutive weekly sessions
5:30-7pm on Tuesdays, 14th April - 19th May
Cost for the full series: £90, plus booking fees
Venue: New Road Psychotherapy (73 Church Road, Hove)
Limited to 8 participants

It's been lovely to welcome the sun back to Brighton and Hove this week after a very wet start to the year! Do you notice you feel differently when the weather is brighter?

When you're already feeling low or stuck, the presence of seemingly endless grey days can exacerbate those feelings. If you've found yourself struggling lately and have been considering reaching out for support, we're here to help.

We are an organisational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and have been established for over 20 years. Across our two centres - one in Brighton, and one in Hove - we have over 70 therapists covering a wide variety of approaches. We offer support for individuals, couples, children and young people, as well as group therapy.

If affordability is a barrier, we have low cost services for both individual and group support, which are run by supervised trainee therapists completing placements with us as part of their qualifying training. Low cost sessions for individuals are £27/week, while our low cost group sessions are £17/week.

You might be...

Experiencing sadness or anxiety
Navigating change or loss
Finding it hard to cope with stress
Facing relationship challenges
Exploring your past or your identity
Feeling uncertain, lost or lonely
Living with health conditions
..or something else.

Whatever you're walking through in life, we are here to walk beside you. We can't promise sunny weather, but we can help bring some clarity and relief to the things that feel dark or heavy.

Book an initial consultation via the link below, and we'll match you with a therapist as soon as we can - for individual therapy, we currently expect to be able to do this within as little as two weeks.

*NEW* Lunchtime Yoga Nidra: Deep Rest for Busy Days

We all know that sleep is essential to our wellbeing, but the idea of daytime rest is often treated as optional or even indulgent. It can be hard to take time for ourselves amid life's pressures and responsibilities, and we can easily find ourselves becoming over-stretched and under-resourced.

Maybe you...

😵‍💫 Feel 'tired but wired', and struggle to switch off even in moments of calm
🪷 Have tried unwinding with traditional meditation but find it doesn't help
📈 Long for a more balanced relationship with productivity

If any of this sounds familiar, our new Yoga Nidra series is for you! Offering a practical lunchtime pause for the nervous system to reset, the sessions have been carefully designed to support physical and mental recovery from ongoing effort and stress. No movement, no performance, and no expectation to “clear the mind” - just an opportunity to come into your body, feel held and supported in a safe environment, and allow yourself to fully relax.

Over six consecutive weeks, each practice will explore a different theme - guiding participants into a state of deep rest to ease overwhelm, boost energy and focus, and nurture emotional resilience.

Led by Rory Singer, an experienced psychotherapist and qualified Yoga Nidra instructor inspired by Buddhist teachings, all sessions will include a 30-minute meditative practice followed by a short reflective discussion.

Intentionally priced at an affordable rate, and available to attend either in-person or online, the aim of this offering is to make quality rest as accessible as possible to anyone who needs it.

1-2pm on Tuesdays, 14th April - 19th May
New Road Psychotherapy, 73 Church Road, Hove
Cost for the full series: £45 in-person, £30 online

To book or view the full details, including an overview of the weekly themes, visit our website:

We look forward to welcoming you for six weeks of rest and replenishment!

* NEW CREATIVE WORKSHOP FOR THERAPISTS *

Deepening our Understanding of Client Work through Storytelling & Improv

Saturday 11th April 9:30am-4pm
New Road Psychotherapy (73 Church Road, Hove)
Early bird price £110 until 1st March

Looking for a playful way to boost your confidence and ease anxiety when working with the uncertainties of therapeutic exploration?

Clients often come to therapy with resistance, coping strategies, or other ways of thinking and being that might feel limiting or restricting. As practitioners, offering space for the emergence of new perspectives and possibilities requires us to remain open and innovative ourselves - yet this can be challenging to do whilst holding the complexity of a client's experience.

Combining the power of storytelling with the freedom and spontaneity of improv techniques and games, this interactive workshop will help you embrace your own creativity in order to better support your clients.

Facilitated by experienced counsellor and trainer Aileen McCormack, the session will provide an informative, relaxed and experiential opportunity for learning and self-exploration. It is suitable for both qualified and trainee therapists, and no previous experience of improv is necessary - just a willingness to experiment and collaborate.

Registration now open via the link below - book your spot before 1st March to benefit from the early bird discount!
