Unusually working on a Saturday evening! First time funeral at the Brighton Greek Orthodox of the Holy Trinity Church for a Bulgarian family. Very multicultural and an honour to support.

Jim Carrey once said: Grief is not just an emotion—it’s an unraveling, a space where something once lived but is now gone. It carves through you, leaving a hollow ache where love once resided.

In the beginning, it feels unbearable, like a wound that will never close. But over time, the raw edges begin to mend. The pain softens, but the imprint remains—a quiet reminder of what once was. The truth is, you never truly "move on." You move with it. The love you had does not disappear; it transforms. It lingers in the echoes of laughter, in the warmth of old memories, in the silent moments where you still reach for what is no longer there. And that’s okay.

Grief is not a burden to be hidden. It is not a weakness to be ashamed of. It is the deepest proof that love existed, that something beautiful once touched your life. So let yourself feel it. Let yourself mourn. Let yourself remember.

There is no timeline, no “right” way to grieve. Some days will be heavy, and some will feel lighter. Some moments will bring unexpected waves of sadness, while others will fill you with gratitude for the love you were lucky enough to experience.

Honor your grief, for it is sacred. It is a testament to the depth of your heart. And in time, through the pain, you will find healing—not because you have forgotten, but because you have learned how to carry both love and loss together.

Instead of saying, "I know what it feels like", let's say
"I cannot imagine your heartbreak".

Instead of saying, "You're strong, you'll get through this, let's say " You'll hurt, and I'll be here.

Instead of saying, "You look like you're doing well, Let's say, "How are you holding up today?"

Instead of saying, "Healing takes time", let's say "Healing has no timeline".

Instead of saying, "Everything happens for a reason, let's say "This must feel so terribly senseless right now".

And when there are no words to say at all, you don't need to try and find some. Love speaks in silences too.

The Hull Funeral Home Scandal - Legacy Funeral Directors

At Last, Justice Is to Be Served: Charges Brought in Hull Funeral Home Scandal

After a harrowing year for grieving families and the community of Hull, a significant step toward justice has finally been taken. Robert Bush, the man at the centre of the deeply distressing Legacy Independent Funeral Directors scandal, has been charged with 64 offences following a painstaking police investigation.

This case has sent shockwaves through the funeral industry and beyond, not just because of its scale, but because of the trust so devastatingly betrayed.

The investigation began in March 2024, when Humberside Police were called to the funeral home’s premises. What they discovered was beyond troubling: 35 bodies and an undisclosed quantity of ashes were removed, sparking an immediate public outcry and a criminal investigation of unprecedented scale for this sector.

Now, more than a year later, Robert Bush, 47, has been formally charged with offences including preventing lawful and decent burials, fraud by false representation, and theft — offences that are alleged to have spanned from May 2012 to March 2024, and which impact over 250 alleged victims.

Bush is due to appear at Hull Magistrates’ Court on 25 June 2025.

For those affected, this moment is long overdue. The trauma of losing a loved one is profound enough; to later discover that their remains may not have been cared for with the dignity and respect promised — and paid for — is something no family should ever endure.

This case has also exposed a critical gap in how the UK regulates the funeral industry. The absence of mandatory licensing and inspection for funeral directors has left room for such tragedies to unfold unchecked. Thankfully, this scandal has already prompted louder calls for national oversight and reform.

As a professional within this industry, I feel the weight of this story. The funeral profession is, at its heart, a vocation rooted in compassion, dignity, and service. The actions alleged in this case stand in complete opposition to those values. But it’s essential to remember: one bad actor does not define an entire profession. Most funeral directors work tirelessly and honourably to guide families through the most difficult moments of their lives.

This is a painful but vital reminder of why we must hold ourselves — and one another — to the highest standards. Trust is sacred in this line of work, and when it’s broken, the damage reverberates not just through families, but through communities.

The legal process now begins in earnest. Justice, long delayed, is finally on the path to being delivered.

Come and join us on Sunday 9th June @ The Big Help Out in Hove Park from 11.30 – 4 and meet the local charities working in the city and enjoy lots of fun activities for all the family.
A fun dog show, music from local bands, a dance show, and traditional game stalls, as well as bric-a-brac, and food stalls.
Last year, King Charles III wanted to stimulate volunteering and to coincide with his Coronation, The Big Help Out was created, a day when people could re-discover the joy of volunteering. This year The Big Help Out is back and Brighton & Hove Soiree Rotary Club has planned an event to promote local charities, and introduce people to the opportunities for volunteering in the city.
This day enables people to come and see the work that these charities are doing in the city. For example, Pelican Parcels a charity that supports young families across the city, or Together Co, who work with the local community to alleviate loneliness, and our local Hospice - The Martlets.
