Some of us may have grown in families that have cultivated within us a sense of trust in receiving what we need from the world outside. And some of us may have grown up in families that taught us that the journey of our needs from the inside to the outside, will remain unmet and incomplete. And some of us may have had a healthy mix between the two. We carry the stories of our needs, as we graduate from our families into the relationships of the big wide world, and they define the size of our dreams, the shapes of our relationships, our strength to risk, our openness to show or know ourselves. We can hold all of the above shielded and compacted into the darkest, deepest, most inaccessible corners of our heart, from where they will continue to contract us towards life. Or, we can muster the enormous courage required to say yes to all of the above, to all the risks that opening up to them might entail, to all that saying yes to them might cost us, and let them lead us into a deeper intimacy with the fulness of life.
