'Patients should feel the best they can, and that includes having their hair nicely brushed and their skin beautifully moisturised.'

Ginny, a Nurse at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, launched an amazing initiative to improve hair and skin care for patients from diverse backgrounds.

Ginny sourced a range of combs, hair and skincare products that can be used for patients of all hair textures and skin tone. She also trained other staff on techniques to look after the skin and hair of patients from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

'Our patients have diverse backgrounds and we didn’t have the tools to look after their hair properly. All we could get were little white combs which just didn’t work, especially on afro hair.

Some patients’ hair got so matted we had to cut it off, which was heartbreaking for me. I want all our patients to be looked after as they deserve to be, especially when they are in intensive care.'

Well done Ginny, for such a brilliant initiative to improve inclusivity! 💙

The Covid-19 pandemic has sparked an increase in racism experienced by nursing staff, according to the founder of an organisation set up last year to promote equality.

“If they were experiencing racism before Covid, now it will have increased,” said Neomi Bennett, the Black British agency nurse who created the Equality 4 Black Nurses (E4BN) group in July 2020. She described racism in the health and care sector as being at “boiling point” and a “pandemic in itself ”.

There’s little consensus around ‘star dawg’, some describe it as a strain of cannabis however the term is sometimes used to describe cannabis which has been laced with he**in or spice. Either way, it’s one for healthcare professionals to be aware of.

Working with people affected by substance misuse it’s not unusual for clients to dispute the results of toxicology so being able to have informed, nonjudgmental conversations with them about how unexpected substances may be present can open up a space for them to think about how street drugs are rarely ‘pure’ and the risks of using them. Some are cut with adulterants to make them more profitable but some, as articles like this suggest, are purposely laced to encourage progression onto other more profitable and addictive drugs. It’s a way for suppliers to create or expand their markets.
