I've been talking a lot about marketing recently which all came from a post about starting and running your own business. At the time I said I jumped the gun a bit with marketing so time to do some back tracking. I did a blog and post about brain storming your business idea. So from here you need to expand on that brain storming and remove what is impossible or impractical, what might be further down the line stuff and start to put some context into whats left behind. What do I mean by that? Let's take an example and run with it. Where to work would be one of the topics you covered. So you might have listed own premises with other practitioners renting space, rent a room, mobile and treatment room at home. Firstly remove what you definitely don't want to do, then look at what is most practical for now and where you would like to be 5 or 10 years down the line and build your plan around that, put meat on the bones of the idea! It's important to know what you want and where you want to go with it or you'll be floundering in the dark. You need to do this for everything you have brain stormed and eventually you have a plan of where you start and where you want to end up.

One last post on marketing for now. Use your greatest asset to get new clients your existing ones. Word of mouth is the best advertising you will ever get and it can be free or insensitivised. Often clients will recommend you but you can encourage them to by offering both them and the new client a small discount. My clients recommend me with out needing to offer discounts but when I started out and was still building my reputation and business I used this method and it works. Now my clients check its ok to pass my number on. It doesn't have to be just clients that recommend you either. I have Physio's Chiropractors and GP's that will all recommend me. Again it comes back to building a solid reputation with people, professionals won't recommend you unless they are confident it what you do. It takes time to build a reputation like this, but it's worth it.

These guys offer some excellent courses. If you want to add to your skills or learn something new this is a good place to start.

Please read on if you'd like to train to become a Personal Trainer and Specialise in Health related to the Pelvic Floor and Core.
Personal Training with a Specialism, especially one you can relate to, can provide you with a good career or a secondary income.
For people who have come through pregnancy or other life changes resulting in a dysfunctional pelvic floor or core, and who want to help others with science first based techniques and understanding to get themselves right, then this bundle of courses could be perfect.
You will suit this course if having the correct information is important if you are open to learning how to ask the right questions and then discover the answer from journals and papers (learning 1-1 means you will get to know how to find evidence in a safe learning environment where non-academics have thrived as much as those with Degree’s).
Students who usually want this course are stuck for time, so we teach this online one-on-one in your time. You can start straight away, and you can learn at your own pace. Our courses always have and always will be evergreen, so you know you won’t have to pay again if you take a break.

The courses are taught exclusively one-on-one by Amy, who runs our Instagram account specialising in the Pelvic Floor and Core, https://www.instagram.com/pelvicfloortrainingspecialist/
Amy is also a Mother to three, has two dogs, and has a successful Personal Training and Coaching business, so she is very well-placed to teach this bundle of courses. Amy is the author of the Specialist in Pelvic Floor and Core Training, which she wrote after completing the FASTER courses.
We only have one Amy, and she has limited space to mentor, so we will have to close the door on this deal after the first few sign-ups. So get on the course quickly if you can.
The bundle is designed to take you from no qualification to a fully qualified Personal Trainer with a scientific specialism in training people’s core and pelvic floor.

The bundle includes -
1-1 Support / Tutoring from Amy
L2/3 - Diploma in Personal Training
Level 3 - Pre and Postnatal Exercise Design
Specialist in Pelvic Floor and Core Training
Movement Coach (our course with a considerable exercise library)
Field-Based Biomechanics Coach

I mentioned there were a couple of other ways other than paying out for courses that will benefit you knowledge. I talked about the benefits of swapping treatments last week. Another great way to boost your knowledge is doing events, again there is so many other benefits. They are hard work but at the beginning of my career I found them really useful. Not for making money, it's really not what they are about. I did mention events briefly on Monday but feel this is important enough to bring up again. They are a great way to get your hand skills and strength up to scratch. You will see lots of other practitioners working so will see lots of different techniques. You will start to make friends and build important networks. It's also a potential avenue for getting work, as I have mentioned before if I hadn't gone to events I would never have got a job at Bath uni. Sometimes it's about who you know. But there is a lot to be learnt at events.

Many moons ago before the internet became such a big thing many therapists would leaflet, either dropping them through letter boxes or at events, annoying people by putting them on their windscreens. I don't think this is done much anymore but if its on your plan, unless you are specifically targeting people, directly talking to them and putting a leaflet they want into their hand then this is not good use of your time. However finding the right way to talk directly to people and having some information on hand can be very productive. When I first started out I used to go to sporting events and provide pre and post event massage either free or for a small charge. This is how I got a lot of my original clients and also made some great friends and some great contacts. It can also be a great laugh and if you are new to sports massage a good way of getting some practice in. This won't stay on your marketing plan forever but its a good one for when you are starting out.

I talk with students a lot about gaining further knowledge once they have qualified and usually it's what course should I do next? There are actually a couple of other ways to learn rather than just plowing money into courses and one of these has several benefits. Swapping with another practitioner. This is acutely more important than you think. Firstly you both get a well deserved treatment, this job is hard and it doesn't matter what wonderful techniques you use or tools it is hard both mentally and physically you need treatment. And I always get asked how often do I get treated and who treats me? Secondly every therapist has their own style and nuances, generally they are very similar to the person who originally taught them but they develop their own style and finesse, you can learn a lot of new ideas and techniques this way, its great. Finally you have a sounding board someone who really understands the various elements of what you do, what you hear and what you have to deal with. What better CPD. If you aren't already find someone to swap with!

Marketing really is a big topic. There are lots of ways so next is social media. Everyone has there preferred platform but you need to think about the market you want to target. There is loads of information out there about social media and how to get the best from it, again do some research, think about who you want to research and then the part that takes some work create good content. You can't just post these are my treatments and this is what I charge book with me. It can't be all about selling you need to give people information and knowledge they might be interested in that will bring them back. Good social media takes more effort than you think. Create a list of topics your clients might be interested in then break them down into bit size pieces of useful or interesting information.

Another way to gain and retain knowledge is CPD continual professional development. This can be a lot of things from reading books, blogs and social media posts to going on courses. This is the one I want to talk about, courses. I find when students are nearing the end of the course they are in learning mode and just want to add more and more knowledge this is great but I urge caution here. Firstly to much at once and you won't absorb it, secondly you are likely to run out of steam. Thirdly If you are newly qualified then you have no idea of your strengths and weaknesses and what direction you are going to end up going in, it might not always be what you think or even plan. Take your time booking your next course practice your new skills for 6 months or so then go for it. By then you will know what you need to work on, what interests you.

We briefly talked about websites last week and this is one way to market. Next up is google my business. This is a useful tool which you can constantly update, post on, add pictures and get reviews. It gives you maps, directions and a link to your website. Getting the address verified can be a little trying! but all this will help to create a good online presence.
