Great advice about a diverse plant based diet, however do not panic, diversity does not disappear after a few days of unhealthy eating. It happens only over a prolonged period of time such as weeks or months. So if you improve your diet and lifestyle, you can have days off without overall negative impact (and you will feel the difference and crave to go back to healthy eating :)

I loved the debate. It would be great to see studies quoted of younger people suffering from allergies, asthma, eczema and how vitamin D supplementation may help them regulate their immune response better (not just quoting studies of elderly people in care homes as their overall health outcomes would be compromised, the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is higher in that age group and issues with absorption of calcium would be more prominent).

In addition, what about the significant group of people who do not eat dairy due to allergy, intolerance or vegan diet and have lower calcium intake from foods? Wouldn't they benefit from calcium supplementation to prevent damage to their bones and teeth? Could you provide studies of these groups? Also, calcium is better absorbed with vit D3, K2 and magnesium which was not mentioned and the type of calcium in supplements can determine how much of that micronutrient is absorbed (e.g. calcium carbonate is poorly absorbed, calcium citrate or bisglycinate provide higher absorption rates). It would be great to see more studies on these specific groups discussed which cover wider age range (children and young adults).

It seems that before we advise people to stop giving their children vit D during the winter, we need to evaluate studies of children who suffer from frequent chest viral/bacterial infections, frequently miss school and get poor growth and learning performance as a result of frequent illnesses and antibiotic treatments. Do you have studies of these children who could benefit from taking vit D rather than being sick 4-5 times in one winter and getting multiple antibiotic prescriptions which would further damage their microbiome?

Finally, it would be great for more studies around absorption. Everybody has a different absorption capacity and getting vitamin D from mushrooms may not be the most bioavailable source for them. Unfortunately, not every family can afford a winter sun holiday and have heard many medical practitioners say if they could, they would prescribe a sun holiday! However, for the wider population, a high-quality vit D supplementation may still be the most affordable option in the UK winters when we may have months on end with grey skies...

How ethical is it to advise the government on Nutrition while paid by food companies producing ultra processed foods? 🤔

I hope this news is a catalyst for change in SACN (The UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition)
and puts stricter rules for “independent advisers” who must not have any ties with food companies.

There should be a shift towards seeking government funding for nutrition research (rather than private companies) to ensure independent and unbiased results which can benefit public health.

Luckily, as Nutrition Practitioners we look at independent research (not paid by food companies) and adapt diets to suit the individual’s health needs and absorption capacity, therefore Personalised Nutrition is most effective and beneficial.

However, I wonder how would government guidelines affect everyone else who cannot afford and access personalised Nutrition advice and solely relies on these public health messages? It is time to invest in and prioritise public health to tackle the rising problems of chronic conditions. Prevention is always better than cure!!! ❤️

Today I took part as a volunteer in my younger son’s school cross country competition to be a marshal and cheer on all young athletes! 🏃 All boys and girls did tremendously well 🏆

ELECTROLYTE BALANCE

One of the best ways to quickly and naturally restore yours or your child’s electrolytes after intensive training is coconut water ☀️🌴🥥

MUSCLE RECOVERY

A soak in the bath with Dead Sea salts or magnesium flakes can help prevent muscle aches and speed up muscle recovery.

DIET

On days when we do intensive training, increasing our protein intake by approximately 20% can help rebuild the muscle mass we have lost in training.

After 3 full days of lectures at University of Worcester and a long daily commute on the train, I am feeling a little tired but excited at the same time! I met our fantastic lecturers and all my lovely fellow students on the MSc in Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine course! 🤗📚

My way of unwinding after a long day to help me recharge is:

✅ a warm bath with detoxing salts
✅ a freshly cooked nutritious meal with my family and …
✅ an early night (no later than 22.30) with a cup of camomile tea at bedtime

What is your way of recharging when you feel tired? 😊

10/09/2024

It has been a long time since I last did a post on social media as my studies and research have taken up most of my time.

Hope everyone has been staying healthy during the summer months, enjoyed plenty of sunshine and topped up on their vitamin D! ☀️❤️ During the summer we took time to relax and travel; recharge and prepare for the start of the school year.

This week I started working towards achieving a dream I have had for a very long time, so I’m super excited to announce that I have just started a MSc in Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine! 📚🥳

It is a great challenge to work and study while also being a parent to 2 young children. However, once we find something we are passionate about, we don’t have to work a single day in our lives! ❤️ Nutritional Therapy has certainly become this passion for me in my life 🥰

I hope to be sharing helpful research in the coming months 🙏🏻
