ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is a treatment that comes from traditional Chinese medicine.
Very thin needles are inserted in certain areas of the body for therapeutic and preventive purposes

How does it work??
Traditional Chinese acupuncture is based on the theory that energy flows through the human body through channels called meridians. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) considers that any pain is the result of energy interruptions on certain meridians, and the stimulation of sensitive points on the meridians can restore energy and implicitly reduce pain, be it musculoskeletal or internal.

Taking a more logical approach and with a legal scientific basis, it was concluded that when a needle is inserted into the meridian points, the central nervous system is stimulated, which results in the production of natural substances in the body such as endorphins, which are natural pain relievers that helps in combating pain.

In which pathologies is acupuncture used??
Over the years, acupuncture has been intensively studied in Western medicine, and the results are quite inconclusive.
However, in many musculoskeletal pathologies there is a solid scientific basis, that acupuncture can help immensely in combating pain and improving the quality of life.

Acupuncture can be effective in:

A very interesting case I got to see this week where 52 year old woman sustained a left ankle fracture approx 18 month ago. Her last X-Ray was done 6 weeks following the injury which showed her bone was fully healed. However she has still been in severe pain for the last 18 months with the left ankle. Loads of swelling, pain and weaknes for more than a year and a half. She hasn't been able to do a single leg heel raise for more than a year. She saw other physiotherapists and had rehab for more than 4 month, but with very minimal results. She has had a corticosteroid injection ,but again with only short term benefit.
When I have assessed her she couldn't raise her heel off the floor even one single inch.
10 min later, after P-DTR treatment her pain reduced from 8/10 to 2/10 and was able to heel raise for the first time in 18 months.

50 years old woman, complaining of chronic pain for more than a year in right shoulder. She has tried physio, massage, pain killers, but nothing helped long term
On history taking she reported a C-section with her pregnacy which was more than 10 years ago. Why is this important? Scar to the skin will cause sensitivity of the peripheral nervous system from the area, therefore her brain was receiving wrong information from the scar which leaded to an overprotective response of her nervous system to the right shoulder muscles. As can be seen in first part of the video, touching the scar would improve her movements and pain immediately. 15 min later she was pain free for the first time in a year. ❗️❗️❗️WHAT IS P-DTR THERAPY❗️❗️❗️
Proprioceptive-Deep Tendon Reflex (P-DTR) is a neurological manual therapy that aims to improve the body's neurological network and address pain, dysfunction, and weakness.

Our brain receives information 24/24 h from the outside world and the body itself ( muscles, joints , ligaments, skin etc) through the peripheral nervous system. All that information comes through different stimulus ( sounds, light hot/cold, touch, impact, sharp) which is being taken by our peripheral nervous system ( nerve endings/ receptors) and then is sent to the brain to process it. In a healthy peripheral nervous system the brain will interpret those stimulus as normal, however after an injury to the musculoskeletal system the information from the nerve endings might be abberant. If the information is aberant then the brain will produce aberant musculoskeletal changes ( such as tight and weak muscles) which can lead to postural changes and pain.
With P-DTR we can find and address those faulty informations, resetting the feedback the brain receives from the nerve endings and normalise the brain respone which will lead to pain relief. For booking see link below
