✨World Breastfeeding Week✨

1st - 7th August

The pictures here might bring back so many happy memories for some people & for others it will remind them of a very difficult time.

Yes, it's true that breastfeeding provides an amazing amount of nourishment to baby & it can reduce some of the barriers that are there when trying to access formula/ food however it can also cause a huge amount of stress & pressure during a time where a lot of women feel at their most vulnerable.

Some are lucky to be well supported & to have a smooth breastfeeding experience, however a number of women find it extremely difficult & they feel unsupported. There are so many reasons why breastfeeding may not be easily established & pressurising women to continue when perhaps it isn't the most appropriate thing for them or their baby is not right.

Women should be supported in all aspects of feeding, whether that's via formula, their breast, donated milk or anything else. Women should be listened to & respected no matter their decisions.

And for those who would like to/ can breastfeed, do it wherever the hell you'd like to!

Educate, support & empower.

✨Watermelons are for eating, not birthing✨

It may have felt like you were carrying a watermelon for the last few months of pregnancy but let me reassure you, birth is nothing like birthing a watermelon & here's why:

* A watermelon is one huge round shape, a baby is not

* A baby's head has the ability to flex & move, unlike the fixed/ hard shape of a watermelon

* A watermelon wouldn't have a clue how to navigate your birth canal, a baby does

* Your wonderful cervix opens, thins, moves forward and softens which therefore provides plenty of space for your baby to move through

* A watermelon does not interact with or respond to the amazing hormones that a baby helps to initiate

So let's just leave the watermelons as a delicious snack (& to Harry Styles 🍉) and know that your body and your baby know exactly what to do. Birth is nothing like birthing a watermelon, thank goodness!

Now, someone pass me the watermelon!

The wonderful cervix 💮

It's spoken about so much during pregnancy & labour but what exactly is it & what is its role?

Your cervix is a cylinder-shaped neck of tissue connecting the uterus & va**na primarily made up of fibromuscular tissue. During pregnancy it does a great job of keeping baby in and protected from infection and during labour it stretches, thins, shortens and opens so baby can move from your uterus ready to be born.

In your calm, relaxed & happy state your surges develop and work to open your cervix smoothly & efficiently. Your body and baby working together in perfect harmony.

It's your choice if you would like to accept va**nal examinations during your labour and if you'd like to know how 'dilated' you are 💜🌿

YES YOU DO 💪🏼🙌🏼

You have everything you need, no matter what route your birth takes to have a positive experience & be happy with the decisions you make. Things that can help you to feel calm, informed & in control are:

🌿 Completing the Harmony Hypnobirthing KGH course 😉
🌿 Identifying & releasing any fears you might have about the remainder of your pregnancy or labour
🌿 Using positive affirmations & visualisations to solidify what you'd like your birth to look like
🌿 Researching areas of birth that you're not sure of so you have a good base knowledge
🌿 Asking questions to your birth professionals in relation to your situation/ experience rather than general facts & figures
🌿 You & your birth partner (if present) being on the same page with choices & thinking ahead of what you might like to do
🌿 Creating a relaxing environment no matter where you choose to birth your baby
🌿 Listening to your body and choosing positions that are comfortable & optimal

A cesarean birth can still incorporate all of the above, you still have the right to have the experience you're happy with. A c-birth doesn't take any of this away from you.

When you sign up to the H.H course, you'll receive a pack of my affirmation cards which also allow you to write your own on the reverse so you can really focus on the experience YOU want 💜🌿

Home comforts can have such a positive impact on how you feel in your birthing environment. When you are comfortable & calm your body relaxes which encourages the amazing natural hormones to flood your body and as a result your labour is more smooth and more efficient 🙌🏼

So, what could you pack in your hospital bag (amongst all those snacks!) to bring those feelings of home with you?
✨ Your favourite cushion / blanket
✨ A scent that helps you feel calm/ powerful - aromatherapy oils
✨Battery powered candles/ lights
✨ A photograph
✨ Affirmations
✨ A particular colour which helps you to relax
✨ Music
✨ iPad/ phone - charger
✨ Eyemask/ ear plugs
✨ Moisturiser

What would you take with you?

Save some space in your hospital for some of these items & bring a bit of home with you into your birthing environment 🌿💜

✨ DAY 8 ✨

Day 8 gives another insight into what key aspects one of my clients took from the course and our time together.

The breathing techniques & relaxation aspects are a common theme in my clients feedback. They are both such powerful tools during both the pre & postpartum stages.

I think one of my favourite things in the course is a recognition that the mum & birth partner (where ones being used) can bring so much control & calm into their labour & birth experience simply through learning what their options are, taking time to relax & consider these options & utilising their breathing techniques.

All of these aspects ensure that the women remains in the parasympathetic NS, allowing all of the wonderful, natural hormones to flood her body.

No matter what route your birth takes your powerful breathing & relaxation techniques are always there 💜🌿

I did my first session with a lovely mum-to-be (& friend) last night and the realisation that the feelings of contracting and relaxing during labour are just the same as any other muscle in your body when they are working hard is one of my favourite parts of the course.

Before I started Hypnobirthing I was guilty of viewing labour as a huge, scary event that you couldn't really understand if you've never experienced it before which can then easily give way to fear. But through bringing it back to the facts of how your body is working and responding to your baby makes the whole process feel normal and therefore managable and actually something to feel excited about!

Your uterus is such an amazing muscle, protecting your baby during pregnancy and then working hard with you and baby to bring your baby into the world during labour. It knows exactly what to do, so you can relax and feel confident that it is contracting & relaxing, just as it should 💜🌿

These comments from a mum I worked with has made my morning 🥰

Its such a special privilege to be able to work with mums-to-be during their pregnancy journey. Getting to know them and identifying any worries they have and then seeing them over come these and go on to have a positive birth experience has to be the best gift a Hypnobirthing teacher can get.

Women have the right to have a birth in which they feel calm, informed & in control & Harmony Hypnobirthing helps achieve this through education & teaching of techniques.

I can't wait to work with and support more amazing ladies 💜🌿

Surge? Wave? Contraction? Whatever you prefer to call them they are a powerful, intense & amazing experience.

You and your surges are working as one, helping to bring your baby closer to you.

Your uterus is working like any other muscle would when you are undertaking some form of exercise by contracting & releasing. Working in perfect harmony with your body & baby.

Embrace the power your body has & welcome each surge 🌿💜

What is a positive birth?

A positive birth is one where mum feels empowered, calm, in control & powerful and she is able to make confident decisions based on the information available. The mode or route that birth takes does not determine this.

A positive birth experience can be va**nal or cesarean and can involve medical intervention if needed. As long as mum and birth partner are supported to make the decisions that are right for them and their individual situation, a positive birth is achieved 💜🌿
