Time to stock up on antibacterial and calpol!
Back to school means There is always something going round!
The good news is, if your child is a pretty good sleeper normally then it shouldn’t take them long to get back on track after an illness.
So how do we manage it in the best way?
🌟It’s never nice to see our little ones poorly, always respond to their needs.
🌟If their illness is so bad that you want to stay with them at night then I suggest trying to sleep In their room rather than bringing them into yours.
- spending a few nights on the floor in your child’s room is likely to disturb your sleep slightly but when the illness has passed and you return to your bed, your child isn’t having to adapt to any change, their sleep environment is exactly the same.
🌟 Be as consistent as you can. Aim to follow your routine as close as you can, especially their bedtime routine, the pattern of events leading up to sleep will help them feel comforted.
If you need to give them medication in the night, set up a short, simple pattern in their room so we are encouraging them back off to sleep quickly after.
🌟Understand you are likely to have some night wakings and unsettled sleep. Don’t panic, don’t stress, do what you can to settle them and make them feel comfortable.
🌟 If your little one needs fluids be in the night and you don’t normally offer milk then try to only offer water (if old enough)
🌟 Allow a little more sleep and rest. We know that our bodies need rest to recover. If your little one is sleeping a little more than usual, let them.
DONT PANIC!
Illnesses pass, even if you fall into bad habits and your little one gets better but their sleep doesn’t straight away then just gradually work closer to your routine, get working on the issues by supporting and guiding them back to normality.
