One of the most common questions I get asked

No one needs to be scared to improve your child’s sleep
No one needs to feel guilty for wanting something to change
No one needs to sacrifice their bond and connection with their child to improve sleep

Controlled crying / Cry it out are outdated methods that we do not need to use.
We have come a long way since then. We have learnt so much more. We are more in tune with our children’s needs.

Is there anything worse?!

Have you had this happen?

Managing routines when your child goes to childcare can be a little frustrating.
Most childcare settings will do their best to accommodate your child’s normal routine, but sometimes it’s not quite possible.

I help my clients find the right balance and work out the best plan with creating a predictable routine that’s similar across the week to avoid confusing your child.

It is totally possible to be flexible with routines but danger naps late in the afternoon is definitely something we want to avoid 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

I am so proud of how my method helps give you the confidence to make small changes to your settling patterns, your childs routine and sleep hygiene.

I promise you NEVER have to leave your child to cry alone, with no support and no comfort.

Gently building your child confidence, gradually making subtle changes working up to cot settling and independent settling.

This gives you the foundations to get longer naps, longer stretches of night sleep, easier resettling, less night wakes, gradually reducing the need for night feeds plus much more!

Time to stock up on antibacterial and calpol!

Back to school means There is always something going round!

The good news is, if your child is a pretty good sleeper normally then it shouldn’t take them long to get back on track after an illness.

So how do we manage it in the best way?

🌟It’s never nice to see our little ones poorly, always respond to their needs.

🌟If their illness is so bad that you want to stay with them at night then I suggest trying to sleep In their room rather than bringing them into yours.
- spending a few nights on the floor in your child’s room is likely to disturb your sleep slightly but when the illness has passed and you return to your bed, your child isn’t having to adapt to any change, their sleep environment is exactly the same.

🌟 Be as consistent as you can. Aim to follow your routine as close as you can, especially their bedtime routine, the pattern of events leading up to sleep will help them feel comforted.
If you need to give them medication in the night, set up a short, simple pattern in their room so we are encouraging them back off to sleep quickly after.

🌟Understand you are likely to have some night wakings and unsettled sleep. Don’t panic, don’t stress, do what you can to settle them and make them feel comfortable.

🌟 If your little one needs fluids be in the night and you don’t normally offer milk then try to only offer water (if old enough)

🌟 Allow a little more sleep and rest. We know that our bodies need rest to recover. If your little one is sleeping a little more than usual, let them.

DONT PANIC!
Illnesses pass, even if you fall into bad habits and your little one gets better but their sleep doesn’t straight away then just gradually work closer to your routine, get working on the issues by supporting and guiding them back to normality.
I am here if you get stuck

Letting go of that all important nap!

Doing it at the right time is the most important thing. You need to know your toddler is definitely ready to drop the nap. Every child is different.
The average age for this is anywhere between 2.5yrs - 4yrs old.

From 2 years old we expect to see a toddler sleeping for roughly an hour at about 1pm and then going down for bed at 7pm as a basic guide.
Before cutting the nap out completely, try reducing the amount of time they are sleeping first.

If your little one is sleeping through the night and enjoying a nap in the middle of the day then there is no rush to drop it.

You need to wait to see these signs consistently to ensure it’s not anything else affecting their sleep and they are actually ready to drop the nap.

🌙 If your little one has consistently slept through the night and suddenly started waking in the night unable to go back off themselves
🌙If they are starting to wake super early in the morning
🌙If they are now fighting to go down for that nap.
🌙 If they are taking much longer to fall asleep at the start of the night.

Cutting the nap completely is a huge decision for you and your little one. Children still need down time, time to unwind, relax and recover from the activities of the day. As parents we also deserve some down time, time to get some jobs done, relax and have a cup of tea!

So what happens when they no longer have that precious nap?!

I have a really useful and simple answer to that question.
Replace with independent quiet play!
It provides your toddler with down time and you get to have some time to yourselves too!
Tie that in with an early bedtime and that transition can be enjoyable!

If you would like more information on how this works and how to introduce it to your toddler then comment “no nap”. I would love to share this with you!

We aren’t striving for perfection!

Creating healthy habits when it comes to sleep still requires flexibility, it doesn’t always go to plan. Your child may need some extra comfort sometimes. That’s ok!

Here is an example:
My 1 year old didn’t have his afternoon nap, not ideal, but never mind. We were having a lovely time at a family BBQ.
We knew he would need an early bedtime as his body still requires 2 naps a day (normally) and stretching from his morning nap all the way to his usual bedtime would be a struggle.

We rolled with a nice early bedtime. However he was already exhausted, he had a very stimulating day, he was overtired.
Normally, he is happy to be placed in his cot and he drifts off to sleep without batting an eyelid.
Sadly that wasn’t the case, he was upset. He needed extra comfort. I held him close, cuddled him, sang to him, kissed him and he actually fell asleep in my arms.

I want you to know that you will have days where things don’t go to plan, days where you get things wrong, days your child just needs you that little bit more.

It’s ok!

Today, a wonderful lady said to me “Wow, you have inspired me today” what a wonderful thing to say.

She is currently stuck in a cycle where her little girl (22 months old) is feeding continuously through the night, they co sleep and Mum is ready to make some changes but has been so scared and had no idea where to start.

She reached out to me and during our free consultation she stopped me and explained how I have put her mind at ease, my values line up with hers, she’s no longer worried about how her little girl is going to adjust.

She said “You must change so many people’s lives! I am so empowered and excited to start this journey”.

That conversation has made my week, maybe even my month.

Why? because I care, I want to help you, I want to reassure you that no matter where you are in this journey with sleep, I can support you and fill you with confidence.

This lovely lady confirmed that what I do adds value.
