The 'Hot Topic' for September's edition of MIDIRS Midwifery Digest is written by Jodi Whitehouse, Founder and CEO of Caring Matters Now , a UK Charity supporting those affected by Congenital Melanocytic Naevus (CMN).

MIDIRS Editor Sara Webb writes in the foreword "As a midwife of over 25 years, I had never heard of CMN until I visited Caring Matters Now’s stand at the 2025 RCM conference. The stories were both heartbreaking and inspiring. I wanted to share their work so that future parents have the much-needed support and knowledge they provide".

Hear about Jodi's personal experience of CMN, as well as the role that midwives and maternity professionals play in supporting families affected, in the latest edition of MIDIRS Midwifery Digest.

Join MIDIRS and the Midwives-in-Training Research and Journal Review Club for a live online webinar on the topic of 'Writing for Publication'. πŸ“

Hosted by Michelle McKay, Senior Lecturer from the University of Staffordshire, and joined by Guest Speaker Dr Sara Webb, MIDIRS Editor and Head of Information and Research Services at the Royal College of Midwives, the webinar is an opportunity for students to explore the different avenues that can be taken in maternity research publication.

Learn about the importance of sharing maternity research, discover the criteria for getting your work published, and ask Sara questions. In this webinar you can receive personalised support and advice for your research, whether you want to publish in an academic journal, put your work on a blog, or anywhere else.

Start the academic year strong, whether you already have work to prepare for publication (dissertations or essays count!), or you want to know what is involved in publication before you begin writing. It is not an event to miss!

You can get your free ticket to the event (which gives you access to the webinar meeting link) via our Eventbrite, linked below:

"Join us in shaping the future of healthcare by sharing your story and advancing the conversation on professional advocacy"

Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University are inviting expressions of interest for chapter contributions to a new book, which will explore professional advocacy as a powerful, collaborative force in healthcare. It will showcase how advocacy strengthens workforce wellbeing, service quality, and interprofessional collaboration.

Who are they looking for?
πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈProfessional advocates including nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals who can share their lived experiences of advocacy in practice
πŸ‘€ Individuals who have accessed professional advocacy services and can reflect on its impact
πŸ₯ Healthcare leaders who can offer insights into developing, enabling, and embedding advocacy in services

What are they looking for?
"We are seeking stories and case studies that highlight the experience of professional advocacy in real-world settings. These contributions should explore how advocacy is enacted, the challenges encountered, and the outcomes achieved. We also welcome leadership perspectives on fostering advocacy within teams and services. We are especially interested in stories and real-life experiences that show how professional advocacy is making a difference in everyday healthcare practice."

Your contribution might explore:
- How advocacy has helped improve staff wellbeing, retention, or service delivery
- What it means to be a professional advocate
- Practical ways professional advocacy has been embedded into your service or organisation
- Reflections on how advocacy is evolving and what it might look like in the future

How can I get involved?
If you are interested in authoring or co-authoring a chapter, please contact Dr Nieky van Veggel with an idea that aligns with the above topics in a few bullet points, and a short statement of how this fits with your current involvement with professional advocacy.

Contact: Nieky.van-veggel@aru.ac.uk
Deadline for expression of interest: Monday 15 September 2025

The St George's Fetal Monitoring Group has announced new dates for its 'Beyond the CTG: Advanced Fetal Monitoring Workshop', which is returning in November to support maternity professionals in reducing intrapartum risk.

Led by Austin Ugwumadu, renowned obstetrician and international educator, this two-day in-person course equips midwives, consultants, and clinical educators with the physiological insight, frameworks, and practical tools required for safer intrapartum care.

The course will take place 8-9 November 2025 at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London.

Austin Ugwumadu describes the course as allowing professionals to "sharpen their judgement, see a much fuller picture, and strengthen communication with women and families at critical moments. It's about moving beyond the CTG to deliver safer, more response care".

Course attendees gain:
- Clearer understanding of fetal, maternal and myometrial physiology in labour
- Improved clinical judgement in complex intrapartum situations
- Tools to interpret national guidance confidently and avoid unnecessary interventions
- Teaching from an experienced multidisciplinary faculty of midwives, perinatal pathologists, and obstetricians
