Most people from the UK will recognise this plant because of its propensity to sting you with its tiny, spiky hairs…but this plant should be revered, not feared!
From March-around now, the tender nettle tops are full of goodness, swipe left to see the nutritional components of this wonder plant.
If you dare to pick some be sure to take gloves and scissors, and only pick the tops of the stems (approx the first 6-8 leaves). The wonderful part about picking nettles is two more stems will grow once you’ve picked the tops (swipe left to see)!
I love to cook with nettles, particularly nettle and potato soup, but I mostly dry the leaves to keep for teas or overnight infusions ~ (check out the blog post in links for a nettle soup recipe)!
An overnight infusion allows all of the beneficial, water-soluble vitamins and minerals to leech into the water and provide a nutritious and earthy drink the next day.
Some of the benefits from consuming nettles include: helping to modulate histamine response in allergies, supports blood sugar regulation, relief for arthritic pain, plus they contain many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
