NOW HALF PRICE – just £44 with discount code COUPLESWORK50

Yoga for Birth Workshop for mums-to-be and their birth partners

Sunday 18th May 2 – 6pm, Garden Studio in Wick (near Bristol & Bath)

Four hours packed with hands-on learning so you both feel prepared for your big day.

The practical and emotional support a birth partner provides to a woman in labour is absolutely critical. This workshop shows you lots of supportive techniques that genuinely boost your chances of a healthy, uncomplicated birth, without interventions. Randomized controlled trials show that learning these tools reduces use of epidural and Caesarean*

Learn
- breathing techniques for coping during contractions
- breathing techniques to help find calm and rest in between contractions
- breathing for pushing
- how to pant (to reduce likelihood of tearing)
- lots of movements and positions for 1st and 2nd stages of labour
- how you might navigate transition
- key techniques from Molly O'Brien's Biomechanics for Birth to help make extra space in the pelvis, and get a stalled labour going again
- massage techniques a partner can give to ease pain
- rebozo techniques for releasing tension and discomfort (a rebozo is a traditional Mexican shawl; cloths have been used to (literally) support birthing women for thousands of years in cultures across the world)
- powerful visualization and relaxation techniques to stay in the magical, liminal space of birthing!
- how a partner could respond if she feels panicky or like she’s not coping

Full address provided on booking; parking available

Women’s Yoga on Wednesdays 7.30 – 8.45pm
A couple of spaces are available in this friendly & welcoming group

These classes are ideal whether you are new to yoga or you already have a regular practice, and all ages are welcome. In a gentle blend of playful flow, juicy stretching and restorative stillness we take time to connect inwards and cultivate awareness. We move mindfully; build strength; relieve achy shoulders and tired backs; fight fatigue; reduce stress; relax and recharge; and improve sleep. We finish each class with a long, restorative yoga nidra, supported with bolsters and cushions. My aim is to send everyone home feeling absolutely lovely!

Classes are held in my beautiful garden studio in Wick. The next 6-week term begins on 26th February. You can find further details at https://www.lushtums.co.uk/bath, or get in touch at mary.hillyard@lushtums.co.uk

I look forward to welcoming you!

Hello!
Here's a little intro for those who don't know me 😊

I'm Mary. I thought it would be a quick job to write a few words to describe myself, but I find I'm rather distracted by my view of the garden, where a wren is ducking in and out of undergrowth by the pond, and a couple of crows have just swooped in to strut about under the bird feeder. My elder daughter is playing a Chopin mazurka on the piano (and making a much better job of it than I could.) Time to engage the brain and write something I won't delete.

Nature, music and my family are pretty central to my life. I'm always happiest outside, and walking - especially in the mountains - brings me pure joy. A day spent putting one foot in front of the other for no specific purpose other than to cover some ground is deeply fulfilling, though there's nothing to show for it afterwards but a pleasant sense of exhaustion and some laundry. However, it's through gardening that I drift into a flow state most quickly...give me a pair of secateurs or a compost heap to dig out and all conscious thought ceases; hours slip away and hunger goes unnoticed!

My yoga teaching is hugely rewarding, because it's all about helping other women to feel a bit better each week. Tailoring movement and breath practices to meet my clients' needs can target physical aches and ailments and improve energy or ease anxiety. My classes have been described as "down to earth," which is nice - maybe that's what happens when a former biochemist morphs into a yoga teacher; I certainly find the science behind many of the ancient practices pretty cool. But I think it's the sense of our small communities gathering and talking together, breathing and moving together, and, during the last part of the class, resting together, that is most powerful of all. We're social creatures, and there's something magical about the feeling of trust and kindness in the studio. It's a privilege to hold space for everyone.

If you have any questions about my classes (all of which are held in my garden studio in Wick,) then ask away. There's a timetable of classes and lots more info at https://www.lushtums.co.uk/bath

There's something quite special about being part a group of women where you feel really safe to fall asleep on the floor together every week.

In no particular order, these are some of the things that we get up to in our classes:
- laughing
- noisy breathing (on purpose)
- trying things we can't manage fully yet
- wobbling...and balancing
- getting stronger
- releasing tension
- choosing modifications to suit our bodies
- chatting at the start of the class (always)
- chatting at the end of the class (not very often - everyone's quite zen by then!)
- lying down on our tummies
- curling up with our foreheads on the floor
- lying down on our sides
- lying down on our backs
- snoring (occasionally)

I look forward to teaching this class SO MUCH each week - we have such a good time and everyone leaves with bodies and minds feeling blissfully soft and relaxed. Check out https://www.lushtums.co.uk/bath to find out more, or send me a message. Then save your space for the Jan/Feb course, which begins on 8th Jan. There are only
six spots and I'd love you to have one of them!

The best new mum friends I made were at postnatal yoga!

It was years ago now, but I remember all the emotions so clearly. I was a fragile new mum (probably processing some birth trauma, though I didn't know that was a thing) with an 8-week old fractious baby (who had a very loud voice.) I wasn't really coping and I felt in desperate need of some TLC.

And that's exactly what I found. A teacher who held a serene space and shared her calm. The priceless feeling that I was spending time doing something that was just for ME - a person I had all but lost when I became a mother. Some much-needed nervous system regulation. And a group of women who truly understood my experience, as they were all new mums too. We stayed after class drinking tea and talking and talking; feeding, changing, cuddling, soothing, learning, growing confidence.

It was the day of the week I most looked forward to and the one class I made sure to get to, no matter how disastrous the night before had felt.

The months passed, our babies grew up and we moved on from postnatal yoga - but we continued to meet for cuppas, lunches, birthday parties and to talk and talk. We supported each other when our second (and third!) babies arrived, even being on-call for middle-of-the-night toddler care in case Granny couldn't get there in time when labour got going. The children went off to their local primary schools, but some of them came together again at secondary school. Truly precious friendships.

Now it's my absolute privilege to be a qualified postnatal yoga teacher and offer my own mum and baby yoga classes. And I want you to know that you and your baby are welcome just as you are, and that you are so welcome to stay after class in the studio and talk - I'll make you a brew!

The classes are suitable from 6/8 weeks after a vaginal/Caesarean birth, all the way up until your baby is really moving around (around 1 year.) Check out https://www.lushtums.co.uk/bath to find out more about what we do.
And save your spot for our next course, beginning on 8th Jan 😊

Pregnancy is such an extraordinary time - for some it can feel interminable, for others it races by. Whilst there is a real magic to carrying a tiny little person inside you, and you may glow with energy and joy, there can be plenty of aches and discomforts too: sickness, heartburn, painful hips and groin, sciatica. It can feel like an emotional rollercoaster at times - many of us experience anxiety or find ourselves unexpectedly bursting into tears.

In my classes we welcome everyone with a chat: the opportunity for each of you to share, if you wish, how things have been going for you over the last week. For many, it's a chance to unburden a bit to others who have a genuine understanding of your experience - how your hips hurt in bed, or how you found yourself crying at a midwife appointment even though you don't really know why. And amid the sympathy and the nodding heads, come the helpful tips and little pearls of shared experience. The forming of friendships...a group of women being nice to each other. It's so simple and so precious and I can't tell you how much I love it!

And then we move on to the rest of the class - we settle and quieten, breathe, move and relax deeply. Everyone drifts peacefully away at the end, each woman and her baby soothed by the practice and connected with our community.

And yes, there is a WhatsApp group so it's easy to meet for a coffee.

You'd be so welcome to join us. Suitable from the 15th week of pregnancy, earlier if you already have a regular yoga practice. Find out a bit more at https://www.lushtums.co.uk/bath or message me with any questions. And get yourself booked in for January! If you're a new client you can try out three classes for the price of two 😊
