It’s Dementia Action Week, and this year the Alzheimer's Society is focusing on a powerful message: taking action to get a diagnosis. Shockingly, around 1 in 3 people living with dementia in the UK do not have a formal diagnosis.

Many people avoid talking about memory loss because it feels scary, or they assume it's just a normal part of getting older. But getting a diagnosis is a positive step. In fact, 91% of people affected say there are clear benefits to getting a diagnosis, as it unlocks the support, care, and treatments needed to live well.

What are the signs to look out for?
It's not just about forgetting where the car keys are. Look out for these common early signs in yourself or a loved one:

Memory loss that disrupts daily life: Forgetting recent events, repeating the same questions, or relying heavily on sticky notes for things they used to remember easily.

Confusion with time or place: Losing track of dates, seasons, or the passage of time.

Difficulty completing familiar tasks: Struggling to follow a recipe they have used for years or forgetting the rules of a favorite card game.

Changes in mood or personality: Becoming easily upset, anxious, or suspicious in environments where they are out of their comfort zone.

Why take action early?
While there is currently no cure for dementia, getting an early diagnosis makes a massive difference because it allows you to:

Access treatments: Some medications and therapies can help manage symptoms or slow down their progression.

Unlock support: It opens doors to local social workers, support groups, and specialist charities across Bristol.

Plan for the future: It gives you and your family the time to make important decisions about care, finances, and legal matters on your own terms.

Is Hayfever making your spring a misery? Here is how to fight back.

With pollen counts on the rise across Bristol, we know many of our patients are struggling with itchy eyes, sneezing, and "pollen fog." While hayfever is common, you don't have to just "suffer through it."

1. Be Proactive with Your Treatment 💊
The biggest mistake people make is waiting until they feel terrible to take their meds. Antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays work best when they are already in your system.
- Start now: If you know you suffer every year, start your daily treatment before the pollen count peaks.
- Pharmacy First: You don't need a prescription for most hayfever reliefs. Your local pharmacist can provide the same high-strength antihistamines and eye drops as we can, often much faster!

2. The "Barrier" Method 🛡️
Stop the pollen from ever reaching your system:
- The Vaseline Trick: Wipe a small amount of petroleum jelly around the inside of your nostrils to trap pollen before you breathe it in.
- Eye Protection: Wear wraparound sunglasses when outdoors to keep pollen away from your eyes.

3. Leave the Pollen at the Door 🏠
Pollen is "sticky" and hitches a ride on your clothes and hair:
- The Evening Rinse: Shower and wash your hair before bed to avoid rubbing pollen into your pillow.
- Laundry Logic: Avoid drying your clothes or bedding outside on high-pollen days.
- Windows Shut: Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible, especially in the early morning and late evening when the "pollen rain" occurs.

4. Check the Forecast 📈
The Met Office provides a daily pollen forecast. On "High" or "Very High" days, try to stay indoors or head to the coast where the air is clearer.

When should you see us? 🏥
Most people can manage hayfever via the pharmacy. However, please book a routine appointment if:
- Your symptoms are not improving after trying over-the-counter treatments daily for 2 weeks
- Your hayfever is making your asthma worse (wheezing or breathlessness).
- You are experiencing persistent earache or sinus pain that won't go away.

Let’s make this spring about enjoying the outdoors, not hiding from it!

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, and the national theme for 2026 is "Action." While talking about mental health is vital, this week we are encouraging our Lawrence Hill community to take one small, tangible step to support their wellbeing.

What "Action" can you take today?

Connect: Call a friend you haven't spoken to in a while. A 10-minute chat can lower cortisol (stress) levels for both of you.

Move: You don’t need a gym. A brisk walk around a local park or even some gentle stretching at home releases endorphins that naturally boost your mood.

Self-Refer: Did you know you don't always need to see a GP first for mental health support? In Bristol, you can self-refer to local talking therapies via VitaMinds.

Is your asthma in control, or is it controlling you? 🫁

Today is World Asthma Day, and at Lawrence Hill Health Centre, we want to help you breathe easier. Many people think that occasional wheezing or waking up at night is "just part of having asthma," but the truth is, with the right management, most people should be symptom-free.

How do you know if your asthma is well-controlled?
Ask yourself these three questions:

Are you using your reliever inhaler (usually blue) more than twice a week?

Are you waking up at night because of your asthma?

Is your asthma stopping you from exercising or doing your daily activities?

If you answered YES to any of these, your asthma may not be as controlled as it could be.

Top Tips for Better Control:

The "Preventer" is Key: Your preventer inhaler (often brown or purple) is your daily protection. Even if you feel fine, using it every day as prescribed reduces inflammation in your airways and prevents attacks before they start.

Check Your Technique: Using a spacer with your inhaler can help get the medicine directly into your lungs where it’s needed, rather than just hitting the back of your throat.

The Hayfever Connection: With pollen counts rising in Bristol this month, hayfever can be a major trigger for asthma attacks. Managing your allergies with antihistamines can actually help keep your chest clear!

Your Asthma Action Plan: Do you have one? An Action Plan tells you exactly what to do when your symptoms get worse. If you don't have one, or yours needs updating, now is the time to check.

Action Step: 📅
If you’re struggling or haven't had an Asthma Review in the last year, please get in touch. You can request a review via our website or the NHS App. Let’s work together to keep you breathing clearly this spring!
