Gonioscopy is a diagnostic eye exam that uses a specialised contact lens, called a goniolens, to examine the eye’s drainage angle (where the iris and cornea meet). If the drainage angle is too narrow or closed, you may have glaucoma.

Gonioscopy allows us to see directly inside the anterior chamber of the eye, which is a fluid-filled space behind your cornea and in front of your iris.

We look for the drainage angle, which is a ring-shaped area where your iris and sclera (the white of your eye) meet and we measure the width of the drainage angle to determine if it is open and healthy, or closed and blocked. The angle needs to be wide enough for the fluid inside the anterior chamber to drain, reducing the risk of sudden and severe pressure increases.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss worldwide. About 90% of glaucoma cases are chronic, meaning they develop gradually. This highlights the importance of having regular eye exams every one to two years (or at least annually if you’re over 40).

Miss Samantha Hunt is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Vision Care Clinic, with a specialist interest in oculoplastic, lacrimal, and orbital procedures.

Here is a segment of a consultation that Samantha conducted with a male patient for eyelid surgery. The procedure aims to remove excessive skin and fat, resulting in a more open, youthful eye.

A blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery may also be performed for more functional reasons; for example, if an individual’s lids are obscuring their line of sight, affecting their vision.

The procedure involves removing tissue from the lids, along natural lines to avoid easily visible scarring. Recovery time can vary depending on the individual but patients are typically back to normal activities in a couple of weeks.

It’s World Glaucoma Day and we’re here to highlight the risks of skipping your next eye exam ‼️

Glaucoma is an eye disease that affects the optic nerve and is primarily caused by a build up of fluid in the eye, resulting in raised intraocular pressure (IOP).

Changes in eye pressure do not cause pain and can therefore go undetected for years, eventually resulting in permanent vision loss. Glaucoma can steal up to 40% of your vision before you even notice a change. It’s therefore vital to attend regular eye exams to monitor any changes that may occur, especially if you’re over 40.

During your comprehensive examination, the consultant will perform a tonometry test to measure your IOP. At Vision Care Clinic, we use the Goldmann applanation tonometry test as the most reliable way to measure pressure in your eyes.

There are several advanced diagnostic tests that you will also undergo within your consultation, to enable us to build a full picture of your overall eye health.
