πŸ“Έβœ¨ It’s World Photography Day! βœ¨πŸ“Έ

At Medical Illustration team at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, photography is a big part of how we share medicine, science and creativity.

From the accuracy of clinical photos to the creativity of non-clinical photos, our team captures images that inform, inspire and connect.

πŸ† Today, we are celebrating by sharing some of our award-winning photos from last year’s IMI Awards organised by Institute of Medical Illustrators.

These photos show not just our skills, but also our passion for telling stories through images.

🌍 Photography is at the heart of everything we do - in the clinic and beyond.

πŸŽ‰ We are excited to share that the Diverse Images for Healthcare project has been shortlisted for two categories at the HSJ Awards 2025! πŸŽ‰
- Innovation and Improvement in Reducing Healthcare Inequalities Award
- NHS Race Equality Award

Reframe is a collaboration between UWE Bristol, NHS England, and the Medical Illustration team at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.

πŸ“Έ The project aims to support accurate and timely diagnosis of conditions on black and brown skin by creating a free, open access image library of high quality clinical images. Working closely with community groups, we captured professional images that can be used by learners, healthcare professionals, educators, and the public.

Reframe also aims to increase the visibility of under-represented groups in the health professions, with images designed for recruitment, outreach, and education - supporting a more diverse and representative healthcare workforce.

This shortlisting - in partnership with Vodafone Business UK and supported by NHS Race & Health Observatory - recognises the incredible teamwork and dedication of everyone involved: every member of our team, UWE and NHS partners, and the communities who trusted us to share their stories.

πŸ‘‰ If you haven’t yet explored the image library, check it out here: https://reframeimagelibrary.fotoware.cloud/fotoweb/

Thank you to everyone who made this possible. This recognition is shared by all of us. πŸ™Œ

New Video: Preventing Burn Injuries in the Bathroom πŸ”₯

We recently produced this important safety video, led and funded by the South West Burns Clinical Network - Burns Prevention & Awareness Group.

Each year, around 1,000 people aged 65+ in England and Wales are admitted to specialist burn services - many from preventable injuries at home, especially in the bathroom.

The video offers burns prevention and first aid advice for older people, and focuses on 3 essential first aid steps that can make a real difference:

🌟 COOL. CALL. COVER.
COOL - Run cool water over the burn for at least 20 minutes. Remove clothing/jewellery unless stuck.

CALL - Call NHS 111 for advice on any burn larger than a 50p coin, or with blisters. In an emergency, call 999.

COVER - Loosely cover the burn with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy dressing to protect it and ease pain.

Accidents happen - but being prepared can reduce harm and improve recovery.

A big thank you to the SW Burns Network team for your continued trust - we look forward to more impactful work together!

Special thanks to our talented freelance animator, Maria Morris, for bringing this message to life through beautiful and engaging animation πŸ‘.

Please help us spread the word - share this with friends, family, carers, and local community groups. You could help someone prevent a serious injury or respond more effectively in an emergency.

🌟 Our Community in Focus 🌟

We have loved photographing families, patients and staff at St Michaels Hospital of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust for South West Neonatal Network and NHS England South West Regional Maternity and Perinatal Team.

The photographs are part of a project called – β€˜Our Community in Focus’ which aims to ensure all those using and working in maternity and neonatal services feel represented equally and positively πŸ™Œ

By photographing a broader range of families, the teams aim to create posters, leaflets and other materials that truly reflect the individuality and diversity of everyone who walks through the doors.

πŸŽ‰ Recap of "Reframe: A Showcase of Diverse Healthcare Imagery" πŸŽ‰

We are incredibly honoured to have been a part of the Diverse Images for Healthcare project and to have contributed to showcasing the diverse communities represented in healthcare imagery πŸ“Έ

The event last week at The Royal Photographic Society, Bristol, was a fantastic celebration of the powerful photographs taken as part of the Reframe project.

It was inspiring to see the culmination of all the hard work from the Medical Illustration team at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and contributors on display, highlighting the importance of diverse representation in healthcare visuals.

This event marked a significant milestone in the project, and we are thrilled to see the photographs being exhibited and celebrated.

Thank you to UWE Bristol and NHS England for leading the campaign and to The Royal Photographic Society for providing the venue for this incredible event πŸ™Œ

We would like to extend our special thanks to Medialogix for sponsoring the Reframe project and providing the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system, which will host all the images once the database goes live 🌟

We look forward to seeing how the Reframe Images library will soon make these impactful images accessible to a wider audience.
