Our Postgraduate Diploma programme in Primary Care Orthodontics will soon close to new applications for the 2026-28 cohort, starting in June.

The comprehensive 120-credit, Level 7 programme gives General Dental Practitioners the skills and knowledge needed to treat more complex malocclusions, including extraction cases, taking them up to just below specialist training level. It covers all appliance systems – fixed functional, aligners, lingual and Inman – and includes both the theory and practical aspects of orthodontic care.

The course is recommended for dentists who have treated at least ten fixed cases, are treating a minimum of ten orthodontic cases per annum, and are familiar with using fixed appliances. It is delivered over one four-day and five three-day training blocks, as well as weekly online planning sessions, and students will discuss multiple new cases, participate in hands-on practical sessions and be given one-to-one mentoring by specialists for ten treated cases.

Successful completion satisfies the Clinical & Technical domain of College Fellowship and brings eligibility for Associate Fellowship.

This incredible case was completed by one of our Advanced Orthodontic Diploma students, Dr Olivia Nixon, working under the guidance of Prof* Ross Hobson 👏

The patient presented with crowding of her anterior teeth, and was particularly conscious of a retained lower left deciduous tooth. Using upper and lower Fixed appliances, this case involved removal of the baby tooth and three premolars to create space and achieve the treatment goals.

Key objectives:
- improve overbite
- close open bite
- correct the midline
- close space after extractions
- resolve anterior crowding

The patient was delighted, and it's fantastic to see our students successfully manage such a rewarding case with IAS' guidance!
