World Osteoporosis Day.
As you can see from the picture, I was a cute child but I’m a woman of a certain age, am I more at risk of osteoporosis or fragile bones?

Facts:
Osteoporosis is a condition where the density and structure of your bones is weakened, causing weakness and a higher risk of fracture.

Our peak mass is reached between 25-30 years of age.
Teenage girls achieve 95% peak bone mass around age 18.
In women over 65, 75% of hip fractures are as a result of bone fragility.
If you are a women, especially post menopause you are at increased risk but it’s not all about gender.
In men over 50, 25% of broken bones are due to osteoporosis.

Assess your risk,
Female.
Family history of the disease.
Reduced oestrogen levels.
Low levels of activity.
Poor diet, especially as a teenager or younger person.
Smoking.
Above guideline intake of alcohol.
Certain medications, steroids, proton pump inhibitors.

The GOOD news.
You can make a real difference.
Move more, dance, walk, lift weights or at least carry your shopping.
Eat well, encourage younger family member to eat well and avoid extreme dieting.
Consider supplements, VitD3, calcium, magnesium, K2.
NICE guidelines suggest HRT ( MHT) for people at risk, chat to your GP about options.

Your osteopath will have lots of tips and information to help.

World Menopause Day.

Some basic facts;
51% of all humans are born with ovaries, which produce oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone from puberty to menopause.
47 million women will transition into menopause every year, worldwide.
Of these, 70% will experience joint and bone pain, frozen shoulder, an increased risk of ligament and tendon injury, a reduced lean muscle mass, increasing risks of reduced bone density and osteoarthritis progression.
All as a result of the flux in the body of oestrogen.

These symptoms are now referred to as the musculoskeletal syndrome of the menopause.

Doesn’t sound much fun does it!

1 in 3 of us will report back pain at work, with almost 8 million “working” days lost to pain and discomfort.
Sprains, strains, lack of movement and postural issues account for most of these.

No need to hide yourself.

In truth, your spine is strong, flexible and adaptable, it is designed to move, waist, bend and curl.
Your spinal discs are not like “ doughnuts filled with squishy jam”, they are strong, fibrous structures which at very firmly attached to the spinal vertebrae above and below them.
Discs don’t slip - EVER.

Movement will always be your friend, that quick walk to grab a coffee or tea, visit the bathroom, use the stairs, walk around the office, deliver the email message in person.

Back pain usually resolves within a few days, use ice packs ( not directly onto skin) , add a few gentle stretches at periods during the day.

Chat to your local osteopath, that’s ME, alongside gentle treatments, there is always exercise advice, exercise adaptations if needed.
