Flowers in Montpelier Park today in honour of a young man called Tyrell. I didn't know him but still feel the sadness of a young life lost. Heartfelt prayers go out to all who knew and loved him.

Just watched the incredible My Octopus Teacher on Netflix. Deeply moving account of one man's connection to an octopus. His daily visits over a year became like a ritual and helped him heal. This is the kind of connection humans would have had with nature when we we hunter gatherers. Our disconnection to the earth isn't a modern phenomenon but has been happening over millennia as we left the forests for the plains...beautiful described in The Spell of the Sensuous by David Abram

Carried out a funeral service for a family last week and received this very nice feedback today:

'Just a brief email to say a very big thank you for conducting the ceremony on Friday – We were extremely pleased with how it went and we had many compliments on the day. Your calm, clear and measured reading ensured that all who attended were able to follow with ease.

Meeting you prior to the ceremony and your professionalism throughout the whole process was much appreciated. We would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending you.'

Led a funeral service at Westerleigh crematorium yesterday. Afterwards an elderly lady said "I've never been to a non-religious funeral before...that was absolutely lovely and so personal". Feels so rewarding to know your work has impact and is meaningful.

Losing someone you love can be traumatic... whatever the circumstances. If someone dies suddenly or in horrible circumstances we can be deeply scared. But even an expected death can leave us feeling traumatised. And now is a traumatic time to be alive - the pandemic, the threat of ecological and climate collapse, global political instability are anxiety provoking and potentially traumatic. Whether you are grieving for a loved one, experiencing another trauma or you are just interested in finding out more... Gabor Mate is a world expert on the subject and well worth a watch.

Beautiful and hopeful words by Irish poet Derek Mahon, who died in October. A lovely poem for a funeral service, particularly relevant at this time πŸ’ž

How should I not be glad to contemplate
the clouds clearing beyond the dormer window
and a high tide reflected on the ceiling?
There will be dying, there will be dying,
but there is no need to go into that.
The poems flow from the hand unbidden
and the hidden source is the watchful heart.
The sun rises in spite of everything
and the far cities are beautiful and bright.
I lie here in a riot of sunlight
watching the day break and the clouds flying.
Everything is going to be all right.

Love Simon Millward's collection of poems in An Invitation... one of my favourites ....

in the forest
there is no
entrance
no beyond

only upwards
through stillness
between the glow
and the dark

where you leave
there is no
exit

only letting go
